Square Enix Kills FFVII Remake Rumours

Some may have heard rumours about SE developing a Final Fantasy remake for the upcoming PS3 over the last few weeks. It seems every year around E3 rumours start to pour out, but this time some credited sources were claiming the good news. EGM and highly respected websites posted articles stating that SE was seriously making a new FFVII Remake.

The June '06 issue of EGM carried this teaser: "Last year, Square Enix teased everyone with what was called the "FFVII PS3 demo," the article states. "Well, what do you know? This test case was really a sneak peek at a next-gen revival of the PS1 role-playing hit."

And we all swooned.

"Since the FINAL FANTASY VII tech demo at E3 2005, there have been a lot of rumors about the presentation hinting at an actual remake. While the June 2006 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly confirms the remake for release in 2007, Square Enix has never stated this. We have however confirmed that development has begun for Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII on PlayStation 3. These titles are part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Project which also includes a mobile game titled FINAL FANTASY Agito XIII."

We may never know what SE officially has planned, but we can always 'hope'.

And how much of a goldmine would an FFVII remake be?

Sigh how I wish thos rumors were true. I think Square is holding it as a "Trump Card". Its going to be that fallback game that they will make incase Square starts loseing money. I cant say that I dont blame them.

I can assure you with almost absolute fact that this won't happen. Hironobu Sakaguchi himself stated that he wouldn't want to make a remake, and not only that, but if it were to happen, then it would take a very long time due to the fact that most of the team who worked on the game are now working on different projects and the Compliation of FFVII due out later this year. That and they don't want to remake it, as it would give the impression that the game was a one-hit wonder.

See what not many people understand is that SE keep crushing the confirmation status on this game, yet will not openly come out and say "Stop all the speculation, we are NOT working on this title" they mearly say "We didn't say that". The games 10th year anniversary is next year, 2007, if all the speculations are true, then it's the perfect time and it matches up with all the other FFVII compilation stuff that they've been producing and making a cash cow off of.. (50 billion yen in profit?) lets put it this way SE, you did the spin off games, you did the spin off movie, you did the spin off cell phone games, whats left but to remake this memorable/masterpiece of a game.

So it's not that i believe they AREN'T making this game, they probably are, my heart tells me they are, but they are just crushing all speculations that point toward a confirmation. And TBH i think they are smart doing it that way, don't ruin this remake SE...

and to FFGuru89, Hironoubo Sakaguchi said he would LOVE to do a remake, as did Tetsouh, and Kitase, but it's just not within SE's means of doing it right now as they are all focusing on other projects (IE Compilation of FFVII) which then you have to really really investigate that and find, If they are all busy with projects like Compilation of FFVII, that project consists of what, 5 or 6 different games and a movie? why not throw the remake in that compilation, basically what i'm trying to say is that excuse they gave is poor as everyone in SE is working on a BUNCH of titles at once.. all the producers/directors would love to remake this game.. it's just "time consuming" they say, but if it's been in production since before 2005's E3... just think

Actually, if I recall correctly, the tech demo had been in development only weeks before E3 '05. Square indeed has not openly denied a remake, and it's possible they are attempting to keep it under wraps, however, it's unlikely at the moment. Square's plate is rather full, with spin-offs and other installments. Should Square remake Final Fantasy VII, I would want them to be dedicated enough to maintain the quality of the original, and compliment it with additions, otherwise I wouldn't accept anything less. Square has become rather money hungry now-a-days, so it's quite possible they'll produce a remake, however I wouldn't expect anything soon.

Whether they've denied it or not, what would actually be the point in a FF7 remake?! If they changed the story it would upset die hard fans and if the story was left the same and only the graphics and sound were revamped, there just wouldn't be any real reason to play it... much less fork out £40 on it!

We all could argue about this for ages. Who knows what they'll do. They neither confirmed or denied it though; they merely said that that was never announced. As Fuzz said: We can all still "hope".

Ok then, it may have been a misinterpretation of what he said I openly admit that but for a start, the compliation is Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core, Before Crisis and AC, so three games and the film (this is definite because the AC DVD has a movie on the extras disc that proves this, an upcoming look at the Compilation) and although the PS3 will be out in America and the Far East before we get it in Europe, do you really think they'll be able to make it in time? Coupled with the fact that the Compliation is due out later this year and so is the PS3 in Europe, time would be a major issue.

Personally I think if they do make it, they sell their soul. It would be the case that they had one game that was so brilliant that they had to trade on it's success. As a devout fan I would be against it, let sleeping dogs lie!
