How Did Cloud Know?

In the City of the Ancients, Cloud says that he knows that Aeris (and Sephiroth) are there:

"I feel it…"
"Aeris is here…and so is Sephiroth."
"It’s not an excuse. I feel it in my soul."
"Aeris’ voice…coming from there?"

How do you think Cloud knows that they are there? He claims he can hear "Aeris' voice" - is she telling him? Or is it in fact due to Sephiroth? Or is it possible that by this point in the game, Cloud can hear Aeris (or "feel" her presence) because Cloud is becoming stronger and his spirit energy is developing, therefore being a "Neo-Cetra" to a fuller extent (basically, a human who through developing their spirit energy has regained some powers of the Cetra- but due to the lack of knowledge, cannot fully be one).

Just a couple of ideas from me... would be nice to hear what you all think!

Maybe its because of Reunion? Maybe because of it he can feel sphiroth... wel in City Of Ancients isn't it actually a piece of Jenova? Either way thats just something i thought of... that whole "Neo-Cetra" things sounds like a cool idea but sorry shauny boy but i don't agree!

I would say that it is because of the Reunion, but note how Cloud says that Aeris is there first, and then that Sephiroth is. To me, that makes it seem likely that Aeris was the one who told him that Sephiroth was there. Or maybe I'm just being dumb about the syntax of Cloud's speech

Yeah good point.... maybe its because (like in Advent Children) Areis talks to him in visions, she might be doing the same but the gamer isn't shown them. Even though the vision could be some crazy manipulative memory or an effect of the stigma.... most of the things that happen in the whole ff7 universe is confusing!

I reckon it's both Aeris' influence, as in AC, by which he knows Aeris is there, and the Reunion by which he knows Sephiroth

He doesn't have Geostigma during FFVII. He gets it sometime between FFVII and AC.

In FFVII, cloud has a dream. In that dream Aeris talks to him and tells him not to chase after her. Later in the dream Aeris runs away...then Sephiroth appears and tells Cloud 'We will have to do somethign about that girl soon...won't we Cloud?"

This I feel is a dream sent by Clouds vibrant JENOVA cells through the power and manipulation of Sephiroths spirit working in him (which was already exhibited previously when Sephiroth made cloud give him the Black Materia and then attack Aeris).

When he gets there, I believe Sephiroth, through the JENOVA cells, tells Cloud that Aeris is there. Her 'voice' is calling to him, sure, but remember that JENOVA has the power to change a persons looks, actions, and voice. I believe Sephiroth WANTED Cloud to find Aeris...that way he could have her eliminated either BY Cloud or by the JENOVA being that does the dirty deed in actuality.

It has nothign to do with the power of the Cetra, the Planet, or Clouds 'awakening spirit. It's all down to the JENOVA cells Hojo planeted in him at Nibelheim five years ago (in game) and Sephiroths will.

Having said which, no Cloud, and no one else in the world, has Geostigma during the vents of the first game. However Cloud DOEs have the CAUSE of the Geostigma in his left arm...vibrant JENOVA cells.

Upon starting this topic, I thought that would probably be why. I'm just wondering about possible other interpretations, and in this particular case I think that Sephiroth may have had little to do with it. Why didn't Cloud know straight away, if Sephiroth told him?

It was presumably only once Aeris started praying for Holy that Cloud "knew". And so, it is therefore probable that the prayer had something to do with Cloud's knowing. I find it hard to believe that Sephiroth would wait around- he wants to go to the reunion, not go sight-seeing around the City Of The Ancients. If he wanted to kill Aeris, and for Cloud to see, why not do it once Cloud gets there? After all, it is dark once Cloud goes to find Aeris- suggesting quite an amount of time passed.

Because he'd rather have Cloud do it. It'd be fun and torture him. You obviously have no grasp of how the evil insane think.

It's not so much that its a chore as the ansewer seems simple enough to me. Now I'll grant you, its probably true that Cloud didn't know for SURE until Sephiroth did...which was when the crystal staircase opened up down into the heart of the city of the ancients. I just don't think Aeris or the Planet have anything to do with him knowing jackshit.

Ok, that's fair enough, and yes you're probably right about it all being down to Sephiroth. But I'm just trying to look at other possibilities. And if the answer is simple to you, doesn't mean you have to add something like that at the beginning of the post to try and make others feel dumb

Maybe it wouldn't be so simple if you considered other options? I think it was Sephiroth, but I'm considering other possibilities and hopefully a discussion will come from it.

Dosent that also leave the question of where the dream came from? Its true it could be explained as either Sephiroths message or simply some strange reaction in the inert Jenova cells we now know where most definatly in his system, but, well.. I havent played the game in a while so I may be a little muddled here, yet I seem to recall Aeris initiating the dream sequance, I also remember getting a distinct vibe that it was Aeris who was talking to Cloud through dreams and that Sephiroth merely interecepted at the end of her message in a fashion that seemed like he was.. Well.. Taunting Cloud I guess is the best way to put it? It felt more like he hijacked the dream than initiated it to me, but then maybe thats what he wanted Cloud to think?

We also never see anything as definate and graphic by means of some communication to Cloud once they reach the city. I tend to beleive that the place is so [s]ruddy wierd[/s] saturated with spiritual energy that Cloud was easily able to sense those two being present.

Just a thought.. This is a pretty interesting topic..
