Hojo gets killed though! Remember the final boss battle on disc 2? Fighting against Hojo? As for ShinRa, well they must know as in Advent Children Rufus and Kadaj talk about Sephiroth.

"Official reports state Sephiroth is dead.
Shinra, Inc. owns the paper so you can't rely on that information." That was a comment made when Cloud talks about his past, when the group met up in Kalm after leaving Midgar. I'm surprised I remember it, but yay me! Although I guess it doens't really say one way or the other! D'oh. |

And also, it's seen in the Zack flashback that Hojo knows, and if you read the reports in Tifa's old house, it appears that Shinra know everything that had happened, although it may be heavily implied rather than stated. Even so, there's other evidence

Hojo actually makes a comment in North Crater about Sephiroth 'disappearing'.
I don't think Sephiroth ever actually died though...not really.

And what makes it even crazier is that he doesn't really die in AC! he say's "I will not remain a memory" or somehting along those lines... its like he is perminantly around... in the lifestream... coz that stuff does keep going backwards and forwards between life and death so i guess that explains my whole point...
