Theories on Materia

(Hello Mods! I wasn't sure where to put this so if it's in the wrong place... blame someone else

)

What are your theories upon materia? (if it was real that is)

Is it something that somehow takes power from your soul which is harnessed into different effects, such as a bolt of lightning or a meteor shower?

Is it like a gun, triggered when squeezed and shooting out some kind of element that summons lightning?

Or could it be something to do with telepathy? Are all humans telepatically connected to Materia through their weapons? (WTF?)

Interesting topic...

Well, materia is formed from the condensing of Mako, which is the lifestream. The lifestream is the blood of the plannet, the creator of life, of which memories and life flows. When this crystalises into materia, that life is held. Also, either in the game or movie, it is said that the wisdom of the Ancients (Cetra) is inside the materia. Being a civilisation who could speak to the plannet, they are closely connected to the plannet, so in the lifestream, there is probably a lot of consciousness of the Cetra. With Aeris' magical abilities, it is easy to assume that the Cetra were a kind of "mage" civilisation.

As for using materia, I believe that they summon into the spirits of the Cetra, held inside the materia, which casts magic or causes the abilities and such. Their consciousness is inside the materia, so when summoned, the power of those ancient spirits is used.

hm...verry interesting topic especialy sine I never realy sat down and thought about it...I guess Valentine89's theory is a good one and probably most accurate...I honestly cant realy think of another reason besides that materia is a part of the planet and there are a total of seven elements: wind, lightning, ice, fire, water, light, and darkness. It could be that like i said it is just a part of the planet and each part is a diferent element and each did its own special thing. but then contain materia has several elements...

Yes, sort of like what Valentine89 was saying, it carries the wisdom of the Cetra. So one would think that when the materia is used(in the case of the movie, absorbed into the body), the knowledge regarding that specific materia is absorbed as well.

How I think of it is this: Lightning, fire, and ice all occur naturally. Lightning strikes, but we just don't know how to make it strike on command. Once the materia is possessed and absorbed by the user, they then posess the knowledge of how to make the lightning strike. Everyone knows what lightning is but nobody knows how to create it out of the palm of their hand. The materia tells the user how to do that. It grants them a greater understanding of how things work so the user is able to manipulate certain forces.

As for the summon materia, the essence of the summon could be contained in the materia when it's presence in the lifestream was condensed. Instead of Bahamut floating around in the lifestream like everything else, he got condensed into a ball of materia.

That's my theory anyway.

Whats Ultima if not a magic-splosion?

I dunno...I'm of a mind that all materia are is what it has said that they are. Spheres that have been produced from the condensation of souls. Different souls have different abilities, and those different abilities make the different materia.

So it wouldn't just be the 'mage class' souls that made materia, but the souls of the skilled fighters (command materia, deathblow, mime, manipulate) the summoners (perhaps once there were people that COULD talk to and ally with the summoned beasts) and even those that focused their energy into more abstract fields such as extending their own longitivety or perhaps enhancing the skills of others (support and independent materia).

It's all down to souls. Does it SUMMON the souls? No...why would it need to summon what you hold in the palm of your hand? Materia IS soul energy made solid and fit neatly in the palm of your hand.

Wel these are all great theories,but I always thought the materia was a way to link up with the planet, speak to it in a way like Aeris said.
I think it somehow allows you to call the forces of the planet and use them. It dosent hold the actual power in there just a bit of the Lifestream that allows you to connect with the palnet and use its power.
Thats how I think anyway, doesnt make a lot of sense

Then how comes when materia is "unequipped", they can no longer use the magic? Surely "knowledge" doesn't just disappear?

Materia is a funny thing.... When materia is formed its highly condensed lifestream isn't it? so therefore isn't it the condensing of a piece of life.... maybe materia has properties of say fire or whatever depending on what spirit it was, for example a creature that lives in the arctic would have ice properties.... or maybe it depends where abouts in the lifestream it condenses.... do you think you could force mako condensing to produce materia?

These are just random things coming into my head so if it doesn't make sense don't blame me!

crystals hold information...Materia=crystals that hold info. that teaches the person to use magic for a short peiod of time...

(you can buy materia on Ebay ok well i looked and its not there anymore...BUT THEY REALLY USED TO HAVRE IT it was really shiny o.o)

Well I think materia is a sphere of spiritual energy basically. It is created when mako crystalizesl like they say in the game. It seems a bit complicated on how it is used. Inside materia are the memory and knoledge of those who have lived and died. Materia works by being a link between its user and the Lifestream, allowing the memories associated with that materia to be manifested, creating what we call "magic". So, thats it for me.

MATERIA is a little energy orb formed from MAKO energy and has powers in it and abilities that they give to the user if you had a weapon and placed materia into it it would give you the ability that was in that materia.
