Field vs. Battle Character Differences?

I'm guessing this may have been mentioned somewhere on this forum at some stage in someones life.... but....

How come the characters are less detailed on the field screen as opposed to the battle screens? I can't see it taking up much memory to actually have the characters the same in the field view of the game. I was beginning to think that the characters in the field view were developed when the game was in production for the N64, before development stopped and it was transferred to the PS1. It'd be a hell of an improvement to have the characters from the battle screens in the field as well!

Any thoughts? Or knowledge on this?

There was a patch somewhere, for the PC version that replaces the playable characters with the better high detailed battle models. Although it looks incredibly awkward and glitchy in some scenes.

As for your question though. FFVII was a real experiment on how they could do 3D. They just got better with each successive game.

I would be right in thinking that it was being developed for the N64 though and was dropped for a more promising format (i.e. CD rather than cartridge)? Wonder how far the development got before they transferred production?

For FF5 or if it was 4, they also used 16x24 pixels large sprites for the battles, and 16x16 for the rest of the game.

In FF7 I don't know really, I came up w/ an idea when I read the thread, but that is forgotten by now. Wonder what I thought. I'll maybe come up with it again.

I don't think they actually did any of FF7 on the N64.

Just that tech demo with FF6 characters in a battle.
