Blah blah, the new translation a bunch of bologna?

Okay, first think I noticed when I started a new game was that the introduction was completely redone, pretty much from scratch. Next thing I notice, the entire item list has been redone, Tonic>Potion (since when does a potion recover 50 HP -_-;; ) Potion>High Potion, Tincture>Ether, Gold>Gil (some people made a real fuss about this, personally I don't care either way), just among some of the stuff I noticed at first. Then I started getting some of the other weapons... Main Gauche, Kenpo Gi, Knights Code... Why? What was the point in renaming those items? So, what do you all think, Love or hate the new translation for the game, and if you vote, give reasons why.

well i guess the reason they did it was so it would be like other final fantasys. i mean in ff's there are potions and ethers and gil ect ect. so changing that to me doesnt really bother me. but changing diolauge translation sometimes bugs me cus like in ff5 faris and the other pirates sounded like pirates. in ff5 advanced they dont sound nearly as much like pirates. so the items translation good. text translation some good some bad.

Also, in the original Japanese. It was still potion and ether. So it wasn't just a "to be like the others" change. It was a correction to what it should have been in the first place.

Its still a great game. Its not really a big deal to me to be honest. Sorry, but so the words have changed a little bit. Its not like the battle system changed drastically or the character's parts in the games have changed to you know. This is my opinion and I really don't see the bad part of it apart from the potions recovering 50 HP instead of like 100.

I actually like the new corrected translation better. Mostly for the reason that Phoenix Down is now not retardedly named FenixDown or Revivify.

There are two changes that irritated me slightly. Kefka's trademark laugh has been slightly altered, and Ultros, although properly translated as Orthros in FF: Anthology, was uncorrected back to Ultros.

I find the whole thing hilarious to be honest... For years fans complained about how they're game was not acuratly translated, they moaned about wanting a portable version, now they have both and they yell about that instead.

Admitadly the item names and other minor changes you sight probably go in the category of 'modernization', along with pulling the spells in to the Ara, Aga, ect system of gradeing, but they are, relativly speaking, pretty minor changes, done merely to standardise the series more. I can't say I'm surprised people have gotten there knickers in a twist about changeing Gold to Gil, but that dosent make it any less daft. That being said I think it's kind of daft of the company to go back and MAKE those changes after so long, but what ya gonna do? Daft happens.. =P

As for the trademark laugh, though I haden't actually heard about that yet you can probably put it down to the same reason much of the music has been changed, the fact of the matter is the GBA cannot handle the kind of sound quality present in the SNES version. The DS might have, but then we get into the quanderies of what, exactly, SquEnix might do to try and justify that second screen. I'm not sure there modifieing the game for that console would be a good thing to be honest, it might be better to take poor sound quality over a almost certainly half-assed 3D remake. Who knows? Maybe they'll eventually make a DS version anyway? Wouldn't put it past them..

At the end of the day I just.. Don't care. If I want the 'original translation' I HAVE the two other versions of the game and I can go play those. If I want the new translation I can, as I almost certainly will in a few weeks from now, fork out the outrageous $30 and see what they did - I'll finally get deliciously portable FFVI and THAT I am not going to complain about. Either way it's still the same game.

Well, an official translation was needed, and luckily this time the translators had played the other FF games which had been mainly translated by the Japanese...

The items aren't changing names... The originals where mistranslations... D'you really think that they had 'Tonic's in the Japanese version? And the currency I believe was always Gil. But try translating Gil into English...

As for dialouge changes, I think it's more true to the original, remember the translations which most of us already had where made in a very shorrt time with more than a few mistakes/errors

Well i'm happy that it's a new translation and the solider didin't punch Celes so it better end with more characters than Terra right i mean we want Locke to end up with ether Terra or Celes right now if you say still just Terra i'd be mad and ended up suing somebody because i'm tired of somebody thinking i read imaginary magezine i did read a real one. Now i say i like the new translation. I'm tired of Ted Woosley.

Personally, I like the original Ted Woolsley translation a lot better, if other because it's what i'm used to by this point. Things like "Atma Weapon" shouldn't have been changed - I don't really care how it was in the Japanese version, because it was the official name in the English version we all grew up with (or maybe some of you didn't, but you get the point). It's not too big a deal, though. The only name i'm ADAMANT about keeping is Ultros - that's the name that myself and thousands of others fondly remember him by, and I probably would've gone ballistic if they'd changed it to "Orthros" or whatever. There's a lot to be said for tradition, folks.

But since they didn't, and none of the other "corrections" are that big of a deal (although "Ultima Weapon" still kinda grates on me), I really don't care that much. It's fine either way for me, as it is.

I like the fact that they changed the text, but I think they changed it a little too much.

Like when Edgar and Locke found out that Terra could use magic, Locke was supose to studder for a while then realize what was happening. It adds to the comedy.

The tranlation's are both alright, the only thing I didn't like was as Draken Benvolaid mentioned, the loss of comedy due to removing of stuttering and the like.

Still, at least the name isn't FF3 like in the NA SNES version. That annoyed me until the PSX release, due to the knowledge some games were skipped.
