Not really. Just level up at first. FFIX is one of the less frustrating FF games.

Wrong. You need to get as many weapons as you can if you want to get every ability in the game (you probably won't get all your first time around, but try to get as many as possible... it will help). Having a wide variety of abilities is very necessary.

Also, if you want good stats, equip items that raise Strength, Magic, Spirit, and Speed before you level up.

Learn as many abilities as you can

Open every ATE

Train levels when ever you have the chance.

Do every single mini event to get the full game completed.

All the tips above are spot on, its best to lvl up at the start and upgrade your equipment when ever you can to keep your chars in fighting shape.

main tip: Save Often , in case anything happens.
