IX sucked for many reason... Well its all oppinion but you know.
1: The story: Ok, there was no real story till late late in the game. And even when you find everything out. You realize that the story is cliche. Well, I guess comparied to a game like Xenogears which is from the same generation, very few games have good stories. But, like all FFs after VI, all of its aspects were overrated. 2: Battles: Ok, there was no real change in the battle system since FF IV. The only changes in the battle system was since then was long cinamatic summons, which came from advancements in graphics. Lets get stright to the point. Even for a trip down memory lane, IX was horrid. It was the same crap we've been given for 10 years just put to a different setting. The first handful of FFs was about pushing new boundries. Now we just keep getting the same thing just prettier. And IX is the apex of this. Nothing new, just same story with different names. If I want a game about the past, just remake FF VI.... (my personal favorite) |

i dont know why u guys are complaining about the characters not being entirely human... i mean it is in the name of the game, its a FANTASY for god sake! and IMO FFIX was the best PS1 game (surprise surprise) cus the graphics were great, the music was just awsome, i thot the storyline was rather good, the characters, not all being human, were very interesting to explore and the battle and equipment systems had no faults really. but thats my opinion... and also, it was the first FF i played so i kinda grew attached to it.

FFIX is good
I really like Final Fantasy IX. Probably my favorite besides VI and IV. The people look a little kiddy so maybe that's why so people didn't like it. Same reason why some didn't like Wind Waker... fools...
Although I do admit the last boss was kinda messed. You never saw him beforel, but then you fight him.... Meh... I still think it's better than what people say. |

FFIX is no different. Yeah, so maybe the characters were a little cartoony, but isn't that the point? Wasn't this game a Final Fantasy game? I'm not saying that I'm a fan of this game, because frankly, I've never played more than fifteen minutes of it. But the fact that the game challenges you by forcing you to use the characters and their natural abilities (less customization) is very appealing to me. I see that as a challenge, and not something to make a game suck. It didn't have story? Hmm... well, I could say that FFX didn't have a story worth anything either, but then all the little fanboys would jump me. Games don't have to have the most interesting of stories to make them great. The stories are just what makes them classics. FFIX will probably never be a true classic, solely because its fanbase is minimal. There will always be the people who hate it, and the people who love it. But perhaps the strongest point is that FFIX went back to its roots. FFVII and FFVIII were very modernistic when it came to technology and/or society, but FFIX took a step away from that and touched on what was once a grand sprite kingdom. The majority of the people (not all) that don't like FFIX are also the same kids that started with FFX, or FFVIII, or anything of the Sony era for that matter. It's "foreign" for them to experience something that doesn't require shooting off guns or playing with giant machines.

I really enjoyed FFIX, I started playing (without a memory card) and really got into it. As Colt mentioned, I think it was partially because it went back to the roots of FF. No trains, cars, gas stations, etc. But a more fantastic world. The series went modern, or close to it, for three games (industrial revolution for 6), and it was probably a good move to do what they did with FF9. And I enjoy the characters, what they look like, and what they are. It adds a bit of uniqueness to the game. I believe that people hate it, mainly because they never really gave it a chance, and in their minds always thought that a game like FF7 would always be better than anything else. (Something that I thoroughly disagree with.) |

And shit, now that I actually HAVE the game, I can officially beat anyone who says its graphics suck. It's not that the graphics are bad (when considering the time and system of creation), but it's the character models everyone has problems with. I still reiterate -- it's a FANTASY game. Your main character is supposed to have a tail.
Also, this game is crazy hilarious. I have fallen out of chairs laughing at the scripting. I can't believe how anything so funny can seem so bad to so many people.

Aye, this game had some excellent comic relief, particularly regarding Steiner and Quina, excellent.
I lik characters that don't loko norma.k It gives them uniquity. all the FFVIII caracters were humans. Okay characters, but when yuo have variety in FFIX, it's just fun. Think about it, A monkey tail, a Mage, A rat, A Frog eating creature, it goes on and on. Uniquity is the reason Cait sith is one of my fav chars in FFVII. There is no otehr game where you get in your part a stuffed animal riding anotgher, larger, white one. None other at all. Same with FFIX, it's not often you get to play as the sort of characters that you do in the game, it's great.

Yeah, my main problem with FFIX was that I didn't find any of the characters to be the least bit cool. For me, its really important to have a cool hero and a cool villain in video games (like Cloud and Sephiroth, Solid Snake and Liquid Snake, Cecil and Golbez, etc.) and they have to relate and have history. Their battles have to be personal; more than just "Lets stop this bad guy!" That's two of the things I hated about Chrono Trigger, supposedly one of the best RPGs of all time: First, Crono didn't talk, thereby making him a weak character because his thoughts and emotions had to be expressed by other characters and second, the villain was just a giant monster. I cannot stand RPGs where the main character doesn't talk. I guess I'm getting a little off topic, but what I'm trying to say is that Zidane and Kuja (I wouldn't call either of those guys very cool, but thats just me) had no history with one another and their only relationship was "I have to stop this bad guy's evil plan" and "This guy with a tail is trying to stop my evil plan". But in FFVII, Sephiroth was Cloud's idol, and when Sephiroth became the bad guy, Cloud was afraid of him. In MGS, you had brother vs brother and in FFIV, you had son vs father.
A lot of video games are like that though, so I can't really single FFIX out. However, in FFIX, not only were the hero and villain not cool, neither were any of the other characters! I liked Freya for a while, until she did that river dance thing. Amarant was the ninja character, but that Slash-look-alike couldn't hold a candle to past FF ninja characters like Edge and Shadow. Viva and Dagger were constantly complaining. The main reason I play RPGs is for the stories and the characters, and FFIX did not have the characters part down. I thought the graphics were pretty good and I actually liked the equipment/ability system. I didn't like the Trance system though, and that card game sent me off the rails on a crazy train. |

At least you give legitmate reasons as to why you don't like the game, and this I can respect. No, I don't see FFIX climbing its way onto the top of any list any time soon, but I do enjoy it nonetheless. And yes, the card game has gotten on my bad side. I don't completely understand all of the logistics, so perhaps looking into some kind of guide would help, but... yeah. Don't think that I don't agree with a lot of the things you say. I just can't find any of it a good reason to hate the game. At least... not until I complete it.
I've got this habit of still liking games even if the story isn't completely there. It takes major points off the replay value, of course, but I'll give anything the once-through. (Unless it's absolutely horrid. Because... well, yeah.) Oh well... perhaps my opinion will change once I'm done.
