Getting Whooped by FF2/4

Hey, everyone. I'm new around these parts, but I had a question about SNES FF2/4, and there isn't much discussion about the game elsewhere.

Anyway, I rented the game waaaay back in the day and plowed through it with Game Genie. Naturally, I figure the time has come to give the game an honest playthrough. I just got through the Tower of Zod, and I'm starting to realize that I am just barely getting by, even in random encounters. I just got down into the Underworld, and my characters are about 23-27, Cecil being the lowest and Kain the highest. I can't tell if this is an appropriate level, since almost all of the FAQs recommend insane powerleveling throughout the game. Cecil, Cid, and Kain are all wearing silver(mythril in J2E) armor, with some of the flame pieces from the Tower of Zod. Rosa and Yang are both still wearing the same light gear from Baron: triangle hats and whatever the suits are called.

All of my characters have about 1000-1300 hp, except for Rosa, who has about half. Random encounter mobs in the Underworld do about 150-200 damage a hit, and even more to Yang and Rosa (even when she's in the back row). The Tower of Zod was even worse; I had to run from half the fights and use at least ten potions after each battle. It's a little easier with Rosa on healing duty, but she's burning through a lot of MP after each fight.

Basically, I want to know whether I'm doing something wrong, or if the game is just more difficult than others in the series. My characters lose half their HP in almost every fight, and I can't tell whether I'm underleveled, under-equipped, or if random encounters are just tough.

I am not to sure, it is hard to tell, you still have yet to explain your battle stratagies, current party members, or current magic abilities. Keep in mind if you are having to much difficulties it never hurts to buy some tents and find a well placed save point and abuse the hell out of it. Also you might want to change up your fighting style if you are having alot of difficulty.

As of right now your best bet is to level up Rosa and boost her Magic casting. a good healer is always worth their weight in gold. Also a weapons and armor upgrade is probably needed.

It has been a whole since I have played this, but if I remember correctly, anything that adds fire attributes to your attacks is like shooting yourself in the foot, seeing you are underground. I might be wrong in my memory though. For some reason I am thinking Ice based weapons and fire resistance is a must.

but Like I said be willing to change things up if need be. Hopefully this rant might come of some aid.

I'm thinking that you are probably not at a high enough level and you are under-equipped. You probably want to level up 5-10 levels. You probably don't need to worry that much about equipment seeing as you will be able to get better equipment shortly, but your levels are definitely to low. If you are struggling after each battle, you won't be able to deal with the upcoming bosses. The game does get a little more difficult here, but I didn't find it to be that hard. I was at a much higher level than you though.

If you just got into the Underworld, you should keep your fire/flame equipment equipped. This will be your strongest equipment and you won't be getting the ice equipment until later.

Sounds like you need to Level up For a bit

Spend A whole day just leveling it's usually what i do Set your self a level milestone In your Case Make it Level 30-35
