No transparency in XP paint.

Is there any way I can get a transparent background on Paint for Windows XP?

I really, REALLY hate the crappy mess up Microsoft have made with the XP version of paint, .gifs all mess up and you can't select transparency.

I really wish there was some way to get the Windows 98 version of Paint back on my computer, that let me choose transparency colors and didnt f**k up my .gif images when saving them!

GAH! What the hell is wrong with Microsoft, why did they deliberately make Paint WORSE when "upgrading" their Operating System?!

Umm, no.

You can use other programs, but that's about the extent of it. MS Paint for Windows XP doesn't have transparency. There are plenty of open office Paint-type products which you can use that are LEAGUES better than MS Paint anyway.

I, for one, would suggest Paint.NET -- an open source Paint-type editor that has glimpses of tools like those from Adobe products. It's certainly not as advanced, but remember, it's a Paint-type program.

You can find Paint.NET here.

I will definitely try Loco's suggestion.
Heh, maybe this way, I don't have to go
all the way to my dad's computer to use his
photoshop... >_>

As for MS paint... I never knew it used to have
a magic wand, or transparancy feature in the 98 ver.
The only thing I use MS paint for these days are
screenshots. ^^

Paint.NET also does gorgeous .jpg images with very, VERY minimal dithering.

I do most of my practical cropping and resizing with Paint.NET rather than going to the trouble of opening up The Gimp or Photoshop or anything of the sort. I've even done a handful of banners with Paint.NET. It's rather nice.

What were you expecting? I doubt MS see MSPaint as a 'mess up' in XP, especially since it's a free program that came with your OS.

Why bother fixing the bugs, system crashes and improving stability when you can spend millions of dollars improving a photo editing program like Paint?

My point is that the "old" version of Paint in Windows 98 was BETTER and had more functionality than the "new" one in Windows XP.

Windows 98 let you select a background colour that would be invisible when you saved something as a .gif, so when you upload it onto the internet (like my avatar) then you wouldn't see that ugly blue border around the image, you'd see the webpage underneath (in this case the bar with my Username and such).

Now, even when I open an image with a transparency colour in XP Paint and re-save it, the once transparent colour is just a block of colour that shows up around your image.

Not only that, on some .bmp images that I save as .gif, I've noticed that a area of some colours become corrupted with speckles of different colour, as if someone's drawn pixels all over it at regular intervals. The 98 version of Paint would have re-coloured the area to a compatible .gif shading, at least then you could see how different the image looked and if you still liked it, if not you could just select the "fill" option in your toolbar and choose a different colour for that area. But with the speckled effect it just looks like a mess.

In that case, go back and install Windows 98, since you obviously care so much about MS Paint that you'll write so much about it.

Forget all those better quality image editors - we need MS Paint!!

Hahaha!

I wish I could re-install Windows 98, or even just install the Windows 98 version of MS Paint.

I never realised how incredibly annoying it was not being able to a stupidly simple thing like having a transparent background, until I tried to make an entry for ReLM's FF-Fluke contest.

It's just really infuriated me and set my "rant" mode to hyperactive.
