As far as I know. It's almost impossible for the smaller parties to even get a seat because of our system. I can't remember the specifics because Modern History is a really boring class but it is a fact.. I just can't back it up unless I wanted to get my notes. =]
Well, I think voting should be compulsory because everyone should have a say whether or not they think that. But I agree with you on the advertising. It's wrong. Because even when I watch those advertisements on TV. It makes me feel bad towards the party they are paying out. Even though I have no intention of voting as I can't. It seems to be that Labor has the most of these commericals. But Liberal still has quite a few. |

I think it should be compulsory as well because everybody should get to have a say. I don't think the voting system should be changed. The advertising they currently have is driving me mad as well, every second ad is a Government one and I think they are all stupid. It's like watching the two of them fighting like children lol. It'll be much happier when it's all over, no more ads and constant arguing on television shows.
I hate watching shows like Lateline and such when Government people are on there because all they do is argue, talk over the top of each other and you can't understand a word either party is saying so it's silly. Stop wasting our tax dollars on stupid ads and put it towards our health system, haven't they been hearing the awful stories about people dying and such? That little boy died recently with a twisted bowel (or something) and didn't even get medical treatment for it even though he was waiting for it. It's so sad to hear these things.

Ouch. That's horrible.
Twisted Bowels are extremely painful. Yeah if you don't have money for private hospitals the health system is pretty bad. I always hear horrible stories of people who got turned away, couldn't get a bed et cetera. As well as some of the doctors they acutally hire. I agree with you. The money they put into these silly campaigns should be spent on something worthwhile for the whole community. Not just dished out to people on the doll or as baby bonuses. |

I think our politcal system is in need of reform, because it virtually hasn't changed since it was first written up 1901. So it's pretty much over 100 years out of date and their ability to advertise on TV only began after the original system was establish. They use to only be able to advertise with flyers and newspapers, which are easier for people to avoid. Another problem with the advertising is that only the major (Rich) parties can afford to while minor and independants are virtually invisible.

Yeah. I never see the smaller parties advertise.
Only with their pamphlets on Election day. But by then it's too late anyway. We should get information about every party. Make it more equal |

I don't think voting should be compulsory. Why?
Because some people (I know an awful few), couldn't be buggered to vote, and so just to avoid a possible fine, they just vote in the order of the list or do something else. It means more votes for someone who may be unwanted... >_> And besides, it's a way of imposing a restriction on us forcing us to vote like that... Blehh...

You do have a point. But still everyone should get a say and they should take it seriously, A few who disregard the importance of the election shouldn't change the way it's run.
Maybe it could be optional to vote the party in. But everyone should have a say on something about how their country is run. You know. Like make a difference. |

A noble thought indeed. But the number of the disillusioned, those who just never cared, who feel all parties are pretty much the same or have some other reason, would make the numbers of 'donkey voters' pretty high. It can possibly make a difference...
For the worse...

Yeah, I agree with that. If voting wasn't compulsory then nobody would do it since this country seems to be pretty lazy at times lol. People who donkey vote don't deserve to vote anyway in my opinion, if they don't care about who rules the country then they shouldn't have a say at all because it's not fair to other people wanting fair votes. Donkey votes shouldn't even be counted but that's just the way things go.

Yeah. You should have to right your name on the ballot paper before you vote and if you do a donkey vote you should get fined. But then that takes away the confidential side of things.
It's a tricky situation really. |
