| | Yeah that's true, It's kind of like in FF XII where you don't exactly completely control the characters but you can alter their strategy mid battle so you do still have a bit of control. Mostly you just want to make the right preparations before battle, what troops you put together, classes, etc. I thought it was a great game for it's time, being a realtime strategy rpg, in comparison with all the other turn based ones. It's gameplay was unlike anything else at the time. And it had a lot of replay value, depending on how you played the game, what characters you recruited, what classes you played with, how you defended towns, etc. I think it had up to 13 possible endings! I never got to play Ogre Battle 64 though, It's probably going to be on the top of my list if it ever gets released on the VC, or else I mite try to purchase it online or something. I'd say I like Tactics Ogre more than Ogre Battle though, that's more of your typical strategy rpg for sure. Both parts of the series are great imo though. That's crazy about gauntlet legends not working though. That's one of the few gauntlet games I have beat (a friend and I never made it through Gauntlet IV for the genesis). My friend and I rented it one day and it took us awhile but we went thru it in 2 player mode, getting all the extra classes, etc. Simple games, but I think they can be pretty fun, especially in multiplayer mode. I actually wanted to try to rent and do the same for the newest PS2 version, but my Blockbuster doesn't even carry the game. ![]() Phantasy Star IV is great, I wouldn't say it's the best rpg on the genesis, one of them though. I personally like the Shining Force series better, and in terms of Phantasy Star, I think II takes the cake as the best in the series (don't even bother with III i'd say though). I think to this day, Phantasy Star II is probably the hardest rpg I have played, if not, one of them for sure. I wanted to rip my hair out playing this when I was younger. IV is definitely good though, but I'd put it behind II. Speaking of Genesis RPGs, i was reading Play magazine at work and read an article about this game Beggar Prince, originally a Chinese Genesis RPG released in 1995, it was translated to english by super fight team and is actually being OFFICIALLY released on Genesis carts. First commerical release since 1998, long live the old school!!

| | I think Guantlet Legends is the greatest Guantlet game ever made. I heard dispointing things about the more recent ones. I used to play it with two other players and it was insanely fun. It's one of the greatest multiplayer experiences I've ever had. I prefur cooperation over competition. I've been playing Paper Mario for the N64 recently and wow, is that a great game or what. It is really cool seeing so many classic Mushroom Kingdom characters appear in an RPG. I also liked the small damage scale on the game. I mean 9 damage is awesome and your HP maxes out at 50. I think more RPGs should utilize the Action command idea, but it's practically become trademarked to Mario RPGs as they've been in them since the first one on Snes. Right now I'm giving superstar saga a try. Although it is quite good it is nowhere near as good as paper mario. I would really like to play 1000 year door or whatever paper mario 2 is called but I don't have a gamecube . I'm hopeing Nintendo might release GC games on the virtual console.

| | Ummm, yeah, I'm just going to bump this page up...even though I have been playing absolutely nothing. ![]() I do have a renewed desire to get a Wii though. Apparently, many of the Homestarrunner games will be available for download and will work with the wiimoteamajig. Hella tight, yo...never shall I say that again. Other than that, just the periodic round of Battlefront 2. Watching the movies always renews my desire to play that. Oldest school is D&D. ![]() Gauntlet Legends was an awesome game, although it's the only I've played in the series. Food is good. CP: Battlefront...kind of

| | Heh, thank you Jin, i was thinking about doing the same although I don't have a lot of old school news to report. I guess lately i've been living the motto, that we are too busy playing games to post on here. And with that, i've been lost in the galaxy, ROGUE GALAXY that is! I got it opening day, and it's been sucking my life away ever since. This is such a fantastic and original rpg. While it may have a few issues, an unoriginal, cliche, and very predictable story being one, at the end of the day it is simply one of the most fun rpgs I have played in a long time. Not saying it's better than FF XII, just a lot different, almost completely the opposite in every aspect. FF XII is slow moving at the beginning, this throws you right into the action, the license grid and other gameplay issues are very confusing, the revelation flow (rogue galaxy's upgrade system) is very similar to the license grid but is SO easy to use, so stream lined, and doesn't make every character seem generic seeing that each characters have their separate upgrades and abilities. If you complained about the battles being boring in FF XII because you don't control the characters, the battles in this game are intense and action packed due to the fun real time battle system. Think Kingdom Hearts..but much better and complex. And it's not just about button mashing either, there is a lot of strategy needed, especially with the awesome boss battles! Plus there is almost nothing to break up the game, load times are basically non existent, everything is seamless from battles to entering towns and buildings. Anyhoo, I'm hoping to write a review by next week sometime once I am about done with the game. Three cheers for Rogue Galaxy, easily one of the best rpgs on the ps2! And that's great news about the Wii Jin, I hadn't heard that. Those homestar runner games are hilarious. The Wii is definitely on the top of my list for next gen consoles but I still have a lot of life to squeeze out of my ps2 before I get into it. There's still A LOT of games I want to play. I'm glad to see more oldschool classics land on the Wii like Contra 3. That game is f***in tough! Maybe I'll finally get a chance to beat it!

500 | Hey sorry I have been slacking. I finished school and life is really crazy. Anyhow in old school news. I busted out the 16-bit super Nintendo! I forgot how awesome that console is! I have been playing the heck out of games like earthbound and super mario RPG. I think that this club should have an activity of sorts. SO just as a suggestion what if we make a new Old School Cult of Kefka, bitches holiday and claim that like FEB 21 or some day this month is official 16 bit day (or old school day)! And you celebrate by only playing games that were made for a 16-bit console for that day. You could invite friends over to play super mario world, or Street Fighter II and make a whole party out of it. Also we could use this holiday to promote our club we could make banners or sigs suggesting that other members join in on our holiday. It's just an idea and I just pulled the dat of FEB 21 out of my rear end but it might be worth doing. Any ideas? | ||||||||

| | Hey, props for busting out the SNES maxpower! I wish I could do the same, my friend lost my power adapter to mine that he was borrowing and I don't know where I can find another. Any ideas anyone? I'm all game for a 16bit game, sounds like a good old school idea to me! As for banners, we do have the crowns Maxpower. I'm not sure if you were here when we were talking about them. Check out loco's sig for his crown. He was making some, I think him and I are the only ones with crowns as of now though. I don't have mine is my sig because I'm not General Leo at the moment though. LONG LIVE THE OLD SCHOOL BITCHES!

| The Old Skool Warrior | I'd post more myself, but as many of you already know, I bought a Nintendo Wii last Friday, so I've been without oldschool games for a short while now. When I can afford to, though, I'm definitely going to get a Wii Classic Controller and start collecting some of the titles available for purchase. /grin As for me, lately, videogaming has been limited to whatever I borrow from work for the Wii as well as a ton of Guitar Hero II and then FFXI, of course. ...but to be specific, here's EVERYTHING in my CP for the past week: Pokemon LeafGreen (GBA) Diddy Kong Racing (NDS) (yes, that's right, it's NOT released to the public yet) Advanced Wars: Dual Strike (NDS) Excite Truck (WII) Wario Ware (WII) Trauma Center: Second Opinion (WII) Wii Sports (WII) Final Fantasy XI (PC) Guitar Hero (PS2) Guitar Hero II (PS2) Soul Calibur III (PS2) Super Smash Bros. Melee (GCN) ...and while I DO have my copy of Rogue Galaxy, I refuse to remove the wrapping until I finish at least two of the other RPGs I'm in the middle of at the moment -- a list which includes Shadow Hearts, FFXII, DQVIII, and three others for the PS2.

| WITH LIGHT COMING OUT OF HIS MOUTH? | Like pretty much everyone else (so it seems), I haven't said much of anything lately because I haven't played anything old-school lately. In my case, it's because my laptop died on me, and hence I can't use any of my emulators anymore. *sob* I'd love to break out with my SNES, but since it's in the US and i'm in Norway, there isn't much I can do. So, the only game i've played at all in the last few weeks has been Counter-Strike (LAN parties for the win!), and too much of it. I've almost gotten my external hard drive to work again (yes, it broke too), and it's got Starcraft, Medieval: Total War and a few other gems on it, so the situation's not too bad. Until then, though... CP: Counter-Strike: Condition Zero. *cries softly* | ||||||||

| | Not been up to much lately. Although I may pick up Star Ocean (snes) soon and play through that. On another note : I've finally moved into the Next Generation. I've bought a ps2 (no, that's not a typo). It only took me 8 years to buy one. Lol. CP : Star Ocean 3 : Till the End of Time | ||||||||

| | Star Ocean for the SNES is a great game I thought, especially considering the time it was doing some great and innovative new things. I've played all 3 games in the series to the max, and I still conclude that Star Ocean: The Second Story is the best in the series though they all are great and amazing games. I'm still playing through Rogue Galaxy, though I'm stuck on this stupid one on one battle. God this game has so much going on though, I've spent a shit load of time just messing around with the weapon synthesis system and upgrading my weapons. Fun stuff for sure. I don't know why, I've never been able to get into CS. I'm a pretty hardcore Day of Defeat: Source player (im in the top 40 or atleast usually top 100 of most of the servers I play on a regular basis, 32 at the moment in my favorite. ), but CS is too hardcore and intense for me and my skills don't seem to transfer over well. Even though people say If you are good at one, you'll be good at the other, I feel like it's apples and oranges here. Day of Defeat seems like more of a pure team based game and takes a little more thinking and strategy while CS seems more like lightning fast trigger fingers and knowing maps like the back of your hand. You definitely die in CS A LOT faster than in Day of Defeat too.

| | Cloud, that avatar is SICK!!! Ahem. Gee Loco, that's all you've been playing for the last week? ![]() I haven't played something old school in soooooo long. The oldest game I've played recently is Twinsen's Odyssey, which happens to be 3D, but also happens to be about 10 years old. Fun game. That was about a month ago, when I had more free time, so I haven't really been playing much of anything since then. Sigh. Just the way it goes. CP: Budweiser. Its replay value is pretty good. ![]() | ||||||||

You're right about the difference between the two though. CS:S is all about reflexes and map memorization -- the latter, I'm excellent at, though the former still needs work. My aim is spot-on, and I never miss... the problem is that my reaction times are usually slower than those of the other person. If I get the first shot off, I live, plain and simple. I just happen to die more often than kill simply because of my slow reaction time. CS:S isn't ENTIRELY about that, though. Strats come into play when you're in competitive leagues like CAL (Cyberathlete Amateur League) as I am. Quote:
