Gameplay quality is in the eye of the beholder

Many times it is said that gameplay quality is more important than graphics, and that graphics are only skin deep. Gameplay quality is in the eye of the beholder. That means that different gamers have different standards on gameplay. It depends on the gamer's own perception of the gameplay. Some prefer easier gameplay while some prefer harder gameplay. I do judge by gameplay in accordance with my own standards, not by the standards of some of the gamers who replied in my threads. Graphical quality does not always hurt gameplay quality. Graphics are intrinsic to gameplay. Gameplay is often reflected in graphics.

Yes... Well... Perhaps games are measured by a person's own standards but I don't really think there's an argument there.

However, this may be slightly off-topic however, I am aware of your past experiances with TFF and if you begin to justify your opinion with the same opinion that caused you to have rather radical outbursts you probably won't get a lot of positive attention.

Just some friendly advice

This thread has nothing to do with graphics quality. It is about standards on gameplay quality according to the individual gamer. Gameplay quality is in the eye of the beholder means that different gamers have different standards on gameplay quality. There are some types of gameplay that Cain Highwind likes that I do not like. I do not condone arguments that lead to radical outbursts. I have just had radical outbursts, not regarding graphics quality, but regarding the Wii game Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

So, pray tell, what exactly is this thread about, you've made your statement however you give no point to discuss, no argument to justify. I assume you are wondering what others have to say on the matter on how graphics affect gameplay.

No one disagrees with you or your opinions however, assuming this has been your first post in a few years it seems rather unjustifiable to open up with almost an apology concerning your past experiances and that all of the past is too do with a reasonable difference in opion.

Regardless, in my opinion I believe that graphics are dispensable however a GUI is important. Gameplay quality in my opinion is reflected in storyline and interface, also if the game is fun to play or is sociable can also affect it's quality significantly. A prime example would be Final Fantasy 4, which managed to maintain good gameplay without the need for killer graphics.

In fact, now that I'm onto the subject one might say that good graphics may harm a game, if a developer spends to much time on beautiful graphics then it may deplete the quality of other important things such as replayability and the amount of fun that people obtain from playing. Who wants to play a game with great graphics if the game itself is lacking?

That's your opinion and you're entitled to it... lord knows i don't agree with it in the slightest though, and don't understand how anyone could. I'll be keeping an eye on things in here, and not because of your prior reputation, because i couldn't give a damn about it to be honest... just the opportunity for plenty of people to flamebait is there.

Of course Gameplay quality is in the eye of the beholder, thats why people like different games. Some people lump Graphics into the Gameplay, others like myself don't, otherwise i wouldn't like games such as Fallout, who's graphics weren't exactly good for the time. I'm no "old school gamer" by any stretch of the imagination, but i place gameplay elements of a game far far higher than any graphics elements.

The way your original post is laid out makes me think you never wanted to debate in the first place, which is why i think this topic is pointless... however i am going to leave it open.

Some like unreasonable hard gameplay, but I do not. For example, I dislike the original versions of Final Fantasy I and II, because its gameplay is too hard, having to mash the button many times to get many of an item. I am not actually lumping graphics into gameplay. I lump time into gameplay, such as the time it takes to execute a gameplay procedure. Graphics do not make or ruin a game.

Well yeah a games graphic quality bears little on whether or not I like a game, same as with how easy or hard a game is, whether or not I like a game just depends on how much I 'enjoy' playing a game, and that is all. I still play a lot of emulated games, especially snes; in fact, I own FFVI on the PS1 and I still prefer playing it on the zsnes.

I do not like time-consuming and inconvenient gameplay elements, but there are some TFFers who do. Some prefer the original version of Final Fantasy I and II over the remakes, not mainly because of gameplay, but mainly because of nostalgia. However, I put soundtrack before both gameplay and graphics. I hate chip music, but that is not the only thing. There is a connection between video game circles and music circles. Nostalgia plays no part in my judgement of games. Postalblowfish7 has a unique opinion, finding what I call trash as appealing.

Yeah, graphics are definitely tied to great gameplay. Those old text adventures many enjoyed in the past, and many still do have awe inspiring graphics.

Nostalgia can be a factor, but then if a game did have shite gameplay to begin with, who would feel nostalgia for it later? As far as gameplay is concerned I know I sure as anything prefer as hard as hell game I feel great to finish to an easy game that can be finished over a day or two. It's the sense of accomplishment. And also means your games last longer.

In the end though, it is all a matter of what the individual person prefers. You stated your opinion stating you like graphics and easy gameplay, personally I prefer harder gameplay and good story/characters.
