Long haired folks!

As much as some people may find it to be feminine I like my hair long... anyway...

As some of you may know I have quite long hair for a guy at least being 20 odd inches when straight. Anyway to tell you the truth I haven't had a proper haircut in roughly 3 years now which I last had a mohawk then a skinhead. Anyway I have quite thick hair and was wondering what do you do to keep it free? I normally keep it tied up but occasionally when I brush it I get big knots which most of the time turns out to be a tiny bit of fluff tangling it all up, so now I have a lot of I guess whats called split ends. First of all how long is your hair? Secondly how do you look after it... do's and don'ts etc... also one thing thats been bothering me is why the hell do the bits near my ears remain so short? I've never cut them yet they always see

A guy having and liking long hair isn't feminine Winter and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I don't have long hair, I have a crew cut heh but you know those little eastic bands that you see holding store brought bread in place? that is a good way to keep your hair in place. Do you wrap your hair in a towel or scarf before you go to bed? My mom does and she never has split ends anymore. A hat is another way to keep your hair in place of course you might have to comb it after you take it off. Theres a special shampoo that helps with your type of hair but I forgot the name

Dude, having long hair is awesome.

I used to have shoulder length hair because I just wanted to be different. I too used to get knots and the only thing I could do about them was rip them out which was quite painful. Also when I was at school I used to always wear a beanie and it caused my hair to get so incredibly knotted that I soon never took the beanie off because my haur was an ugly mass of knots. So I decided my only option was to shave it off. At the hairdressers I asked if they could save my hair essentially so I could continue growing it. They said they could and I soon had a very painful experience as they got a brush and forcefully brushed my hair. It felt like they were ripping all my hair out and after amount 20 minutes of pain they had finished unknotting my hair and resumed trimming it until it looked really neat and straight.

But now I recently cut my hair short and only just know as i'm writing this i've realised what a dumbass I am as I just cut off what I went through such pain to keep.

Oh well I'm growing it long again now but it'll probably take to year to get it how it was.

The reason I cut it off was because it made my work hard as I had to tie it back and this damaged it alot and I soon had annoying shorter bits of hair that would get in my way at work as they were no longer long enough to be tied back. Ironically I quit only 4 weeks later.

Geez when it come to hair I sure can talk, huh

Shaa dude, back in the days before they had barbers I bet you there was A LOT of people who had long hair and I doubt it was ever considered "feminine". That pretty much dates back since the beginning of man, lol. The whole "Men with short hair, women with long" trend was probably invented in the 50's or something.

But anyway, I have pretty long hair myself. The back-half sits probably around the same as yours, about twenty inches, and the rest is about fifteen inches long tops. It only looks shorter cause I have a wave/curl mix XD. Most of the time I just keep it hanging unless I go out so then I get a hairband and pull it up/back. I can never decide if I should let the bangs hang or not.

As for having problems I've had to go from a simple thick brush to a larger spread-apart brush which some times can hurt like a bitch when brushing. Luckily for me I've sort of figured a way out how to brush it properly without most of the pain. I also thoroughly brush my hair before taking a shower so it comes out better when I get out.

Besides the pain factor and some other shit, my hair's fairly easy to manage. Given it never sits in the position I want and curls a bit too much sometimes, I'm not really bothered by it. I think I will eventually get it cut though, just nothing REALLY short. I hate having really short hair.

If you want some advice on the brushing though I'd say the best way to do it when you have a lot of knots is do it semi-slow. Slow enough so it won't rip out of your head, but fast enough that it will come undone. I also pull out any locks with just my fingers and manually pull them apart if there's a real bad one. Doing that before a brush can help.

First things' first, go to the hairdresser and have at LEAST two inches taken off to straighten up any split ends. You may not think they're there, but they are. I've had about fifty hairstyles in my lifetime ranging from short and spiky to long and straight and I know for a fact there is NO way to prevent knotting in long hair.

However, layering helps to prevent little annoying ones in the ends of your hair.

Tying up hair is bad for it and brushing when you don't need to is as well. They say when you have a knot, you're meant to cut it out, but if you get a lot, you'd probably be bald within a few days.

As for right now, I have very short, layered hair. It's no fun going to college everyday with long hair. Plus, I look best with shorter hair.

I have it shoulder length. What, about 8 inches or something. I usually have it that length, it's very seldom I have short hair, but it does happen. In fact, I'm going to have it cut next Thursday to about 3 inches...

By far the most common comment I get is about how long my hair is. I don't have an exact measurement but it stops just at the top of my hips. It's also very thick, which is both good and bad. Humidity is my hair's mortal enemy.

So anyways, I usually let it do whatever when I'm at home. It's almost a requirement to pull it back for work though, otherwise it tends to get in my way. Other than that I don't do much for styling. I could, I just don't want to.

The only advice I can think of is, unless your hair is naturally very oily, don't wash it every day. Every other is more than sufficient. Washing it every day will dry your hair out and make split ends more likely.

I don't use any sort of special shampoo/conditioner either, just whatever's cheap and smells nice.

Long hair is NOT feminine. I have long hair and I'm not a girl nor do I act like one. My hair used to be down to about 6 inches below the top level of my drooping shoulders. I had to get it cut when I lost my job back in February coz I didn't want to go around applying for jobs looking like a long-haired hippie. Now it's just below the top of my shoulders. I used Head and Shoulders moisturizing 2 in 1 shampoo plus conditioner. I also use Finesse moisturizing 2 in 1 shampoo plus conditioner. I switch between the two: Finesse on one day and HaS on the next. I also let my hair dry naturally: NO HAIR DRYERS! They cause frizzy hair. On windy days you might have to put your hair up but on calm days keep it down. If you ever exercise, then put your hair up. every month or so cut 1 inch off to maintain those split-ends.

Thank god someone said it. Cutting your hair regularly is important if you want to prevent knots and split ends. Just an inch every month or two will help. And your hair will grow longer and healthier in the long run.

I used to go to a salon, but I'm in college now, and I cut my own hair. You get good at it after a while. It also helps if you have someone you trust who can even out the back.

My hair is thin, and I have a lot of natural oils going on. I have to wash my hair every day, but for most people, that's not necessary or recommended. To make up for the fact that I wash every day, I use a good conditioner. And a weekly conditioner is always beneficial. Also, switching out your shampoos and conditioners is a good idea. I usually buy one kind, finish the bottles, switch to another. If I liked the first kind, I'll switch back to it once I've finished my new one. I like to experiment, so I've tried a few brands.

I love Herbal Essences fruit fusions. I switch back to that often. I've also enjoyed Dove, Tresemme, Loreal (for redheads), and Garnier Fructis. Woo!

Oh! My hair is a medium length. It's just past my shoulders.

Long Hair is NOT feminine, it is only natural. I am a bloke(Man) and I had hair too my hips a month ago but did not brushed it much and had developed too much knots and split ends I could not get the knots out so I asked my mom to do it and she did it for me. Then 40 minutes of pain and 1000+ lose hairs and pulled haires later I was knot free then she cut like 5 inches off cause I had gigan split ends like some 4 inches long. Now my hair is so beautiful I brush it 2+ times a day and wash it 2-3 times a week as well with Head and shoulders 2-1 and H&S conditioner.

Just to tell you somthing about me I had long hair when I was 3-6 years old, then short from 7-13 and 3 fourths years old, then my first year of high school 6 years ago I started too grow it long. Squall from FFVIII was my inspiration mind you thats when FFVIII was one of my top 10 favorite things in my life, and I have had long hair ever since then and will never cut it again. I am going to college for a career that allows long hair too Natural resourses park guide and or horticulture. I love Nature! anyway nice discussion.
