Post Famitsu Awards FFXII Game of the Year

Final Fantasy XII (and Pokemon Diamond/Pearl) was given the Game of the Year award from Japanese game publication Famitsu. I believe it deserves it, which I'm sure most of you can agree. It appears that Nintendo games cleaned up, as well. Here is the full article.

Source: Gamasutra

----------------
Top Japanese game publication Famitsu has revealed the winners of its 2006 awards honoring the top games and companies of the year, with Nintendo taking top honors, and Pokemon tying with Final Fantasy for game of the year.

The awards, handed out at an April 20th ceremony hosted by Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, were based on votes both by the Famitsu editorial staff and over 30,000 reader-submitted selections. Any game released between January and December of last year were eligible for the vote.

Two games were given the Game of the Year top honors, Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, the latest DS version of Nintendo's best-selling franchise, just now hitting North America, and Square Enix's latest of its own top franchise, the PS2 RPG Final Fantasy XII.

Kudos to Final Fantasy XII! They definitely deserve that award. The gameplay and graphics are really good and I think that's what made it so appealing to other gamers. You can also tell that Square has done a great job creating the game and has worked really hard on it since they first started.

I find it sad that everyone is all kudus and this is game of the year. If we keep saying this kind of stuff then square will make similar games to it. I find the storyline to be very boring and the character devolopment was bad. Also the summons was useless. If we get on square about those topics maybe they will improve upon it. We dont want another final fantasy where you have to neglect 3 characters of the game and find characters to be boring. We want it how they use to make it in the good old days where everything was usefull. Thats all I have to say this game is far from game of the year in my eyes but it was decent.

Um...I doubt it. Have you even heard about FFXIII in the works so far. Its much different then FFXII. Excluding the random encounters, Square always make changes in every FF game. Just look at the series from FFI-FFXII. So its most likely that theyll make changes in future FF games.

Some FF games seem similar to each other in some ways, but they're still different. I do agree with you on some things you pointed out with FFXII. It lacked character development. The ending wasn't all that great either. But at least Square made up for it with the battle system and the graphics. And for "neglecting 3 characters" ,they did that in FFVII, FFVIII, and FFX which are great games. Its not really a big deal and you can always switch character whenever in the game.

I have to agree that FFXII should have not received the award. Those who did not enjoy this game won't enjoy any other final fantasy game for a while, or as long as they keep doing this sequel deal. It's final fantasy the story should be told in ONE game which is why I think 12 didn't do well, other than the simple fact that they didn't develop the characters at all. I just hope they do better with 13 which I am sure they will.

It is always pleasing to hear that Final Fantasy games receive awards.
I also agree that the overall story and character development were sub-standard in the series but when I played it for the second time, I somehow found it a little more compelling.
I can understand the deal with the sequels and prequels and spin-offs as a part of Sqaure-Enix's "all games, all platforms" policy. I consider myself a true fan of the series but I just don't have enough money to get all the games on all the consoles - I limit myself to the PlayStation platforms.

And, drizza, don't say things like "we want" when it is "I want" - what You want does not necessarily equal what all of us want.

Nah I see where Drizza is coming from.
Final Fantasy XII was alright, but to some (like me) it just wasn't up to the same standards. Some people prefer a more classical Final Fantasy story and use of characterisation. And some like me just found FInal Fantasy XII too easy on top of that...

Essentially, by the end of FFXII your characters could be so over powered it isn't funny...
And the random treasures were a pain too. Granted actually getting the high powered treasures would make the game even easier, but then doing a whole bunch of things to open a chest and find a knot of rust is far from enjoyable...

I'll enjoy FFXIII if they do a few things. Inject some more characterisation, give up a similar story to the other games and give it that spark the older games had...

Ok if your fine with average storyline. None character development and tons of useless spells and summons then I should say I then. This what I am talking about step out the fan boy box and realize that this game should have been much better then it was. It didnt live up to the hype and I dont agree on that award. It is people like you who praise square for releasing games such as Final Fantasy X-2 and it is sad. Famitsu is losing credibility anyway search them and you will see.

So let me get this straight, since I just only skimmed the article: the game of the year would be voted based on a mixture of all the other categories together, right?, or at least, it makes sense if that's the criteria.
Well, based on that, I would have given Okami the Famitsu Game of the Year Award, myself, since FFXII was severely lacking in several departments.

even if FF12 wasnt truly strong in all the important parts of the game , it was still better then 99% of the games that came out that year. FF's quality is way way above most other game's so called quality.
