I don't think he's as strong or usefull as the Monk used to be in the early stages. For a long time i had no better weapon for him than the Iron Nunchaku. What do you equip him with, other than the Masamune that anyone can wield ?? ( forgive me if i'm wrong, but i don't remember if it's the Murasame or the Masamune that you find in the end & all types can use. XD )

The answer to your question, Cloudy, is you don't equip the Master with anything. This class is designed to outgrow the need for weapons and armor. By the later stages of the game, my Master was by far causing more damage than the Knight, even with the Knight using Excalibur.
Of course, the flipside is without armor, the Master is at risk of taking more damage than the Knight, but his evasion will be far higher. Just don't put the Master in 1st position.
I agree with Sabin106's staring party of Warrior, Monk, White Mage and Black Mage. The other combo I'd use is Warrior, Thief, White Mage, Black Mage. I never found much use for the Red Mage, so I tend to avoid him.
