Just a-wonderin'...

I'm not sure if this is a valid topic, but it's been making me think lately.

I've noticed that it can be a 30 degree [celcius] day outside and feeling pretty hot, but when you jump into a 30 degree swimming pool, it actually feels cooler.

Has anyone else actually noticed this? I want to hear theories! It's been annoying me lately.

That is usually the case with swimming pools unless they are heated or indoor. I remember last year when i was in Portugal it was boiling outside but when you jumped in the pool, you'd feel like you bodt temperature just dropped a couple of degrees. It was kind of refreshing actually.

I don't really have a theory on this subject anyway. If the sun has been on the pool for a long amount of time and it hasn't warmed up then i don't have any idea. However if the pool has been in the shade most of the time before you went in, i can see why its so cold.

As for me, I'll just stick to my warm indoor pools at the swimming baths for now.

Yeah, it's all to do with body temperature. No theories about it.

Your body temperature is what... 35? 36? I'm never sure... But when you jump in water of 30, it's colder than your body, hence why you feel cold. Still, you get used to it eventually cause your body temperatue will then drop towards the temperature of the pool.
The reason it doesn't happen with air of the same temperature would probably be because in a pool, the water's pressing up against your body a lot more so you'll feel it's temperature more. Also, 30 degs would be the temperature of the air. The light rays of the face shining on your face would make you feel hotter than you actually are.

The body temperature ranges between 36.5 and 37, though its often said to be 37 degrees.

Other than that, Neo basically summed it all up. Water is a very dense substance, much more dense than air, so there is more pressure upon your body. Also, 30 degree days are often worse if the surroundings are humid, with more water vapour within the air, which reflects heat from the sun. I guess you are more exposed to the strong sunlight on land than in the water, as the water often reflects and refracts light particles. Hmm... I never was good at physics!

I do know what you mean though, Psycho. My baths are always around 30degrees, however I don't like being exposed in the heat of really hot 30 degree days. Maybe we're all manatees in disguise...
