Final Fantasy Tactics Returns

December 13, 2006 - One day after the surprise announcement of Dragon Quest IX for the DS, Square Enix is all set to drop another bombshell. According reports out of Japan, the next issue of Jump Magazine will contain news of two new Final Fantasy Tactics games.

The PSP will be getting Final Fantasy Tactics: Shishi Sensou, an updated version of the original PlayStation classic. Square Enix is adding new jobs and some slick cell shaded movies, but aside from that, it's unclear what kind of improvements we can expect.

The second project is a bit more mysterious. Nothing is known about this game, except for its title: Final Fantasy Tactics A2 Fuuketsu no Guurimore. We don't even know its target platform. Jump is promising an update down the road.

Both projects fall under a series of projects that Square Enix refers to as "Ivalice Alliance," Ivalice being the name of the world in which both Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII take place. Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings, a DS offshoot of this year's PS2 blockbuster, also falls under this project.

We've yet to see the Jump report for ourselves, but with the annual Jump Festa comic/videogame show scheduled to kick off on Saturday in Tokyo, we're hoping to get a look at both new projects shortly. We'll be back later this week with whatever details we can dig up at the show.

I don't even have a PSP. I thought there would never be ANYTHING that would make me want to get a PSP, either. To be honest, I'm not as interested in the remake of the PSX title as I am in the new title that follows it. So what if little is known about it? That only piques my curiosity.

We won't hear any official word until the weekend, so don't hold your breath.

EDIT 2: According to RPGFan, FFT's new cutscenes will be cel-shaded. Either way FFT's cutscenes could use some work. I was just watching them on YT the other day.

Great news. I can't really see the cel-shading in the game due to the quality of the scans, but hey i'm all about FF Tactics receiving some remake treatment. I agree about the cutscenes in Tactics Cain, they could certainly use some work and these new anime cutscenes are looking A LOT better than the originals. I just wonder if besides the graphics enhancements and cutscenes if anything gameplay or storywise (maybe the translation) will be fixed?

I certainly agree that Ivalice Compilation > FF 7 Compilation. Hell i'd say this game by itself is better than the entire FF 7 Compilation. I still wish we'd see a TRUE sequel to FF Tactics rather than a remake and a sequel to Tactics Advanced, but oh well. This is wonderful news none the less.

And square, when are you ever going to use the ogre battle/tactics ogre trademark?? Looks like i might have to get a PSP as well.

EDIT: After doing some research i found out the official titles are FF Tactics: The Lion War and FF Tactics Advanced 2: The Locked Grimoire. Which interestingly enough can be mistranslated as "The Grimoire of the Sealed Ass." Also, the new character in the scans represents the new job class to the remake of FF Tactics, the Fencer! (Which you can also see in the new logo to the far right)

Too bad the "Alliance" is going to strictly be on portable devices.

OMFG!!! I cant believe it.My favorite game of all time, FFTactics is being remade. But the only down side is that its for stupid PSP. Man i dont like PSP and i never even though about buying it but now that FFTACTICS REMAKE is coming...Why cant they just make it for PS2?? Or both?? I think it would sell MUCH better on PS2. Plus the game loooks AWESOME! The cel-shading anime scenes or what ever look cool. The new job classes and all i really look forward to. I just hope they dont change the story. And i hope the end boss is harder. The Story was awesome so ya. Is it totally confirmed for ONLY PSP or is there still a chance for it to come to PS2?? Hopefully theres a chance.

Wow i never thought about it but that does look like the infamous onion knight! I guess i was just looking at the attire and most of all the rapier/epee like sword and thinking fencer. Now that i think about it tho Ramza holds a similar sword. I haven't played Final Fantasy III yet so I really don't know what the class is all about. Isn't it the most powerful but only when you max out its level? Until you do, doesn't the onion knight completely suck? And i think from what i've read it can equip any weapon or piece of armor and can cast white, black, and summon. I'm not sure what other abilities it uses either, i was just thinking it'd be along the lines of the Fencer from Tactics Advanced. So one new class eh? Sounds good to me

That piece of artwork certainly looks good..it seems to have a bit of a cel shaded look to it, let's hope it's a cutscene and not some promo work.

Awesome! That's definetely Norio Wakamoto in the trailer, but it doesn't sound like they're actually using voice acting.

Still the Reed flute scene is one of my favorite scenes in the whole game, and glad to see it's gotten the cutscene treatment.

The style they're using is wonderful!

Great looking scenes..i certainly agree that the style they are using is wonderful, it fits the game perfectly too. Didn't know until now that Delita's last name is spelled differently in the japanese version.

Until i read your second link i was wondering where on earth was that taken. At first it looked like somebodys home..but a castle. Then i saw the FF Tactics sign above..then i read the next article and it all made sense.

...on a whole different note i noticed the site had a Dragon Quest IX trailer as well which i'm going to go check out. Nice find though! Hopefully we'll be able to see some gameplay soon too.

Wow.......now I want a PSP too. Square's really busy now with FFXIII, the compilation of FVII, XII:Relevant Wings, and now Tactics. I'm really looking forward to what improvements they are gonna make on the PSP version though. Its gonna be great to see what they have in store for us...

HOLY COW, they're actually remaking it! I didn't think they'd actually do it. I wasn't strictly planning on getting a PSP, but I'd do so just for this game. Then again, I'm sure I'll be disappointed by the gameplay... my best guess is that they're just revamping the art and adding bonus classes and such, but they couldn't be bothered to, say, fix some of the gaping game balance issues this game had.

Just please don't make Onion Knight stupidly overpowered. Please?

There's now a direct feed trailer and some nice wallpaper in the downloads section.

There's definetely some new music in there. My guess is that it'll be similar to the CT port (same soundtrack, new music for the cutscenes)

OMFG I have definiatly gotta get a PSP now after watching that video lol. The scenes look awesome. I love them. Man i want this game so bad lol. The original was awesome and now i just hope the remake will be just as good or better than the original. And hopefully battles are a bit harder lol

arrrrrgh fuck a PSP - this is almost, not quite, but almost enough to make me want to get one. maybe if sony would stop being such arrogant asses and lower the price to actually try to compete with the DS (which is completely destroying the PSP). it's going to take more than 1 final fantasy remake to sell the PSP to someone who wants a system for more than 1 or 2 games. oooo or maybe sony will redesign the PSP to make it actually portable, instead of clunky ugly and awkward - then i might get excited.

ok yes, this remake does look badass - and maybe my increasingly bitter taste for sony products is rubbing this announcement the wrong way against the fabric of bias that is my mind. i just don't understand why it took developers this long to look at the PSP and say "wow - there's a lot of power here. why don't we actually make a few good games instead of lower class knock offs of 'best selling' ps2 games?" yes please, i need both a scarface and godfather game on my handhleld - not to mention like 5 need for speed games and 17 EA sports titles being shoved down my throat each year. redesign and cheaper price is the only thing that can save the PSP now - but seeing how many people in this thread are already saying "this sells me the PSP" who knows how many squenixphiles will jump on the UMD wagon. maybe with about 10 titles this incredible the PSP would end up not being the biggest waste of time since the n-gage lol.

I'd just like to state that Sony has shipped a little more than 20 million PSP's compared to Nintendo's ca. 35 million Nintendo DS. So I wouldn't say that the PSP is being destroyed. In fact I would say that it is doing quite considering that Nintendo has been more or less alone on the handheld market for so many years.

I'm not horribly interested in the remake, but the new game sounds exciting. I really hope that it does not end up on a handheld console though. Final Fantasy Tactics deserves to move back on a major console.

It says that there will be another "new" class to the game: Dark Knight. Ohh and that Balthier from FFXII will be in the game ala Cloud but that it will have an impact on the story. I don't know how the'll do that but I'm interested. Too bad I'll never buy a PSP or a DS since I pretty much have lost faith on the handheld consoles.

I'm glad my PSP will finally get some USE.... nothing intrigues me when it comes to PSP; now I'll finally have something to use it for other than an oversized music container...

PSP is an awsome hand-held console, however there have been (in my opinion) no good games released for it that make the system worth buying.
