But of course!
I have been a ska fan since either late 1994 or 1995, when my brother first played for me and our other brother the Orange County Supertones' first album. I don't like the band as much anymore, but I gotta give credit where credit is due; they introduced me to the genre.
In 1996, what
really got me to like the genre a
lot was the band Reel Big Fish, with their single "Sell Out." I also thought the band Less Than Jake was pretty cool, but I didn't get into them until Hello Rockview in 1998. Meanwhile, I delved further into the Christian scene with Five Iron Frenzy (who remain to this day as one of my two favorite bands; the other being TMBG) and The Insyderz.
I also heard the band The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, with their single "The Impression That I Get." I've come to appreciate their more hardcore stuff than this that was on MTV. Another great band that I was introduced to was Skankin' Pickle, who had unfortunately already broken up like 4 years prior (although Mike Park was still doing
The Chinkees. Dunno if he still is, though. He also did the Bruce Lee Band, I think with guys from Less Than Jake.) You also can't deny the Mad Caddies. Crazy diverse sound. Then there was the band "Telegraph," formerly known as the "Scholars," who's name I used as my sn here on TFF and various other places for a time. They remind me a lot of Less Than Jake, actually. There's also the Aquabats, who are always a lot of crazy good fun. I've also heard your Buck-O-Nine. They have a song called "Away" that was on a comp. called "Misfits of Ska II" that I really liked.
I haven't liked every ska band I've heard, unfortunately. For example, I've never been particularly impressed with Catch 22. I like them live, but their studio albums lack something. It's the same case with the Voodoo Glow Skulls; their songs are too chaotic, and blend together on their albums. There was also this band called "Ska King Crab" that was kinda laughably bad. They had a cover of "Take On Me," which was why my brother bought their album. Not to mention a number of christian ska bands that were just "meh."
Ska is still in my blood. Bands I've recently discovered that are cool are a kind of ska-disco sound in the Suburban Legends (who've toured with Reel Big Fish and have been around for several years now, actually) and a more rockin' sound in the band Cellphish (found them on Myspace.
Check it!)
