Fillings.

Man.

There's a hole in one of my teeth. I can feel it!
I've had two fillings in my whole life and this should be my third.

I'm pretty sure everyone -- or a vast majority of TFF'ers -- have needed fillings in the past. How many have you had?
Any other teeth problems you feel like sharing with the group?

My teeth have always been healthy, apart from the fact I have a slight overbite and wo of my teeth are pointy like vampire teefz.

Talk of your......tooth...tales?

Heeey I have 4 vampire teeths!

Anyways, I've never had fillings. I have always brushed my teeth twice a day (minus a few exeptions of forgetting my toothbrush while round a friends house) and use mouthwash and floss after brushing once a week. I feel that its an achievement for being 17 and having no fillings.

As for other tooth stories, I have this nice over-bite. It runs in our family. I had a removable retainer to make my jaw have less of one, and it did work, but my jaw has now gone back into the overbite and I do not intend on wearing that retainer forever! I remember I had it in year 8, and after I had it fitted I had to go into my art lesson. I tried to talk but all that came out was muffled noises. Mr Francis told me not to worry about trying to talk and I should just sit down and relax! Hehe. That thing was one monster of a brace!

Other than a natural overbite, my teeth have always been said as being "in perfect condition" by the dentists. An overbite is nothing to do with dental health though, just jawbone and muscle placing.

Four of my molars have fillings. There was a cavity once that I had drilled. There's wisdom teeth that need removing, but I don't want my mouth cut open. They can push my teeth around all the **** they want.

Otherwise, they're fine. Only kinda yellow. I drink a lot of coffee. With scotch.

I remember losing your teeth as a wee las. So strange. I loved ripping the things out though. Gaw, they should have humans change teeth every year or something. So much fun to wiggle around a whitey in your mouth and spit out blood and teeths to get out of class.

Mmm. Good times.

I have a few fillings, still need to get a couple more. Too much soda when I was younger, I guess. *shrug* I also once had a tooth that only partially fell out, it actually broke in half somehow. I had to get it removed eventually, but I can still feel the spot where it used to be, even years later.

My bottom row of teeth are kind of squished together, thanks to my wisdom teeth. They grew impacted and ended up pushing my teeth down out of their way. It sucks cause they overlap and just look bad in general. I did have all four of my wisdom teeth removed but I imagine I'd need braces or something to put my bottom teeth back where they should be.

I have luckily been blessed with good teeth. Never had a cavity...never needed fillings. Me an my family are all really anal about proper hygeine. It can be a big pain in the tuckus though. When I got preggo though my teeth got really sensitive. Seemed like no about of brushing would work. An I was the kind of girl to brush my teeth 3-4 times a day. My teeth got in real bad shape. After I was done with being a walking blimp my teeth have gotten stronger, but still sensitive. I have never dealt with any kind of mouth problems so really them being sensitive is a huge annoyance.

There are tooth pastes you can use to combat sensitive teeth.

Also, brushing your teeth 3/4 times a day is bad for them. Dentists say you should brush your teeth after every meal -- not true. It's bad for them and rubs off the protection around your teeth. Two / three times a day is enough. (I say this because each of my dentists inform me that brushing more than three times a day is bad... that and, when you think about it, it's sort of common sense, too, y'know?)

Well usually when something says to brush after every meal...you do. An sensitive teeth I think are better than them getting bad on me. When you are preggo your teeth naturally do that. Because the calcium is being drained from your system. For safety you can't even use whitening strips XD.

Brushing 3 times a day before pregnancy kept my teeth healthy. Drinking tap water is also healthier than bottled water. Tap water contains floride. The only time I used to brush my teeth 4 times a day was when I smoked at 18. couldn't stand the smell. My siblings that didnt brush their teeth ended up needing fillings, and had a lot of cavities.

I need to get that kind of toothpaste, but since my teeth are begining to get the calcium they need back to them..the sensitivity comes an goes. So maybe in a couple months I will consider it if they are still a little sensitive. Although they are way better than 6 months ago.

If she hadn't made this thread, however, I would not have heard that brushing your teeth 3 to 4 times a day is bad for them! I learned something new today! Yiy!

Once, I had three cavities drilled in the same sitting, to the roots. It really sucked. One of the fillings for them broke too, so I had to go back in and get that fixed later. There've been two other times I've gotten cavities, too. I don't really take as good of care of my teeth as I should, probably.

I also had my Wisdom Teeth removed, back in the Fall of '03, after my friend Annihilationscape left for the Air Force, and right before I got Five Iron Frenzy's "The End Is Near" in the mail. Or maybe Annihilationscape was still here...? La la la. All those events happened at the same time, anyway. Right before I started college. Mem-or-ies!

Annnnyway.

My mother had some abcess (sp?!) a few years ago. She said it was the worst pain she ever felt EVOR. She said she wanted to kill herself.
Meep.

My dad almost died when he almost drowned in his own blood when they took out his wisdom teeth and left him.

My family is ****ed for their mouth problems. I'm the only one that hasn't had anything really awful wrong with my teeth. I did once have some kind of poison oozing from my gum a few years ago, though. Eww. It tasted weird...

More Tips an Tid Bits

Well according to the British Medical Journal even brushing them 2 times a day (reccomened amount)is a good start, but often adults an teenagers don't brush for the correct amount of time. Nor floss. I will still stick to three times a day though. I have a thing against bad breath.

Quote:
more people than ever are suffering tooth loss and serious dental problems.

But despite this, a new survey shows people still think their brushing habits are doing the job properly.

However, the study, published in the British Dental Journal, showed many people thought their brushing habits were better than they actually were.

Proper brushing can help to stabilise or even reverse the problem. But experts say the message is still not getting across.

Professor Jimmy Steele, an expert in dentistry at Newcastle University, believes parents need to spend time with their children, teaching them how to brush properly.

He said: "The worry is a lack of proper brushing can be habit forming for the rest of your life.

"There is evidence out there that the earlier you start brushing, the healthier your teeth will be in the long-term."

For the latest study, published in the British Medical Journal, patients were given advice on a regime - which in particular said they should brush their teeth twice a day for two minutes each time.

Each of the 17 study participants used an electronic 'data logger' powered toothbrush that recorded brushing time.

They were also asked to fill in diaries detailing their brushing habits.

The data from the logger toothbrushes showed approximately one-third of people followed the advice whereas the diaries suggested that more than half of patients thought they had been compliant.

Lead researcher, Dr Giles McCracken, from Newcastle University, said: "Research has shown that brushing for two minutes is the optimum time for most people to remove the plaque from your teeth.

"If you brush for less time, you aren't removing enough, and if you brush for longer the benefits may not be much greater.

"Patients must understand their health is mainly their responsibility, and if they are not going to comply with the advice of health providers like dentists who have their best interests at heart, they must accept the consequences."

The Newcastle researchers are carrying out further work into how advice is given in the dental chair and whether this can be specially adapted for each individual receiving treatment.

Prof Steele added: "A lot of the problem has to do with the way we lead our lives.

"Everyone is rushing about, too busy to spend the time thinking about how they are brushing teeth.

"Most of us do brush at least twice a day but we don't brush the correct way. Just running a toothbrush over our teeth before we dash out to work isn't really doing much good."

Professor Peter Heasman, who also worked on the study, said: "I think many dentists and dental hygienists are fully aware their patients do not always follow their professional advice.

"Nevertheless, we were surprised to find so many of our patients who were unable to follow instructions accurately, even in the short term."

Patients must understand their health is mainly their responsibility, and if they are not going to comply with the advice of dentists who have their best interests at heart, they must accept the consequences.

Teeth facts

Adults usually have 16 teeth in each jaw.

Four incisors for cutting food, two canines for piercing, and four premolars.

They also have six molars for grinding.

One in four adults unconsciously grinds their teeth, either to relieve tension or because their teeth are not aligned correctly. Known as bruxism, it can result in chipped or broken teeth.

Teeth are protected from decay by a thin layer of calcified substance called enamel, which is the hardest substance in the whole body.

Top tips for teeth

Brush twice a day, for two minutes, with fluoride toothpaste.

Avoid sugary food, particularly between meals.

Clean between teeth, using floss or a mini toothbrush.

Chew sugar-free gum, particularly those containing the sweetener xylitol, after meals.

Stop smoking.
