Although ambulances were reportedly not called to the accident, which occurred just before midday about 40km out of Perth, police investigators have travelled to the scene.

Brock appeared to lose control of his vehicle on a tight hairpin bend before slamming into a tree, a witness to the fatal crash says.

A rally spectator, identified only as Jock, told Macquarie Radio that he was standing just metres from the site of the accident.

"The back end just slid out and that was it, it was all over," he said.

"The car didn't roll, the back end just slid out from behind him and slammed straight into a tree and it got him right in the driver's door."
In the meantime, the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) said it was working with evet officials and police to investigate the crash.

"On behalf of the motor sport community, CAMS offers its sincere sympathy to Peter's family and many friends," a CAMS statement said.

The Targa West rally began in Perth yesterday, with Brock and Hone racing in a 2001 Daytona Coupe.

Brock is a nine-time winner of Australia's most prestigious racing event, the Bathurst 1000.

The 61-year-old father of three rose to national fame for his racing victories in the 70s and 80s, becoming known as "Peter Perfect" and evolving into a full-blown television personality.

Editor of Wheels magazine Jed Bulmer says Brock was the consummate driving professional who won many accolades, but will best be remembered for his mastery of the race circuit at Bathurst.

"You know the great Australian touring car race and a race which is regarded as one of the most difficult touring car races in the world and Peter was the nine-times winner there at what is known these days as the Bathurst 1000," he told ABC radio.

"He had a long and very successful career there, he was the 'King of the Mountain' as he came to be known."

Rather a sad thing to happen, whats worse is it was with a few days after Stever Irwins death. I personally was not a big fan but I knew who he was and respected him.

R I P Peter Brock.

Yeah, I heard about it a couple hours ago. It's a huge shock to Australia considering Steve Irwin was also killed a few days ago. I heard it on the radio at like 3 pm or so and ran out to tell my parents and they were horrified. Two Australian icons/legends lost in a week. It's really disturbing, there's also that saying... these types of things come in threes. Technically it did, another man died not long ago.. a politician who was quite popular or something.

My parents really liked Peter Brock, they used to watch him race a long time ago which was pretty cool. This is a real tragedy and may he rest in peace. He was an amazing V8 supercar driver and he will be very missed by Australia.

Jesus, I hope this isn't the beginning of a trend for Austrailian celebrities. I have no idea who this guy his, but nonetheless it's sad to have another tragic loss of life so soon after Steve Irwin's passing. Bravery has it's price, I suppose.

Oh man. Two people of the same nationality died within days of each other. Practically unheard of!

Personally, I am hoping Australia loses Nicole Kidman next. I despise her and would mourn her death with dancing and revelry. Not that I am a cold-hearted, unfeeling shell of a man, mind you. I just don't feel for this sort of thing. I mean.. uh.

Dangerous animal handler died from animal attack.

Race car driver died from race car crash.

What's next? A professional bungee jumper dies in a bungee jumping accident?

Heavens no!

Oh, uh. R.I.P. Racer Dude

And I would join you. We lose good people all the time, yet people like Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise walk the earth freely. Someone should at least throw large rocks at them.

I don't like Nicole Kidman either but I wouldn't want to see her die...

Peter Brock was known for winning nine times at the 'Bathurst 1000'. It is probably one of the most popular races here every year. The race is held at the Mount Panorama Circuit, Bathurst in New South Wales every October and the race goes for 1000 km.

If you would like to read more about him, here is the Wikipedia article about him.

Now, I am hoping that there are no other famous Australian deaths for a long time. It's creepy that both of them died doing what they loved.

Steve Irwin's death is still being spoken about on the news a lot though. It's still really sad to hear about how the family is coping.
