Are girls underdressed?

Okay so I recently found this article which basically says that a school in Texas has created a new dress code to try and get their female students to wear less revealing clothing to school because the boys are concentrating to much on looking at the co-eds and not enough on school work. So my question is do you think that our society is too lenient on clothing? Should people cover up more? Also why do you think it is only girls who are targeted for needing to cover up?

Anyway here is the article:

Texas School District Bans Cleavage

(CBS) ARLINGTON, Texas With a new school year about to begin, some female students in one Texas school district may have to rethink their wardrobes.

Teen fashions often leave parents a little disgruntled. Arlington Independent School District parent Frances Henson said, “I'm thinking that our daughters are growing up a little bit too fast these days.”

Arlington School Board members agree with parents and this summer, they adopted an unusual amendment to the student dress code.

The new dress code reads, in part, “The display of cleavage is unacceptable. Low cut blouses, tops, sweaters, etc. with plunging necklines are not allowed."

“It's gotten bad enough that, unfortunately, our young males are looking at more than their English book, their speech book, their science book,” says school board president Sherri Wade. “And it's kind of nice to have something left to the imagination.”

Even some teenagers agree there is a problem. “I think it's good that they're doing it,” said student, Tyler Edwards.

Others students say it makes back-to-school shopping more difficult. “I just have to be more careful with what shirts I buy. Change my style a little,” said student, Maria Lopez.

While most parents support the new rule, some worry that enforcing it could be a challenge. “I think that's going to be a little tricky, because it puts a little bit of a policeman approach to the educators, and they really need to focus more on teaching,” said Tom Pederson, AISD parent.

The school board president says they'll do both… and in time, she says, the no cleavage rule will be no problem.

If it's a problem, then they have to do something about it. I think leaving "sluttier" clothing for outside schools is fine, but there should be somekind of dress code. In my country, the students HAVE to wear a uniform no matter what grade you're in (except for the last, if I recall).

Also, girls are targetted to cover up more because men aren't usually the type to go around in skimpy clothing.
That, and the problem with females looking at males doesn't seem to be as much of a problem.

Guys have been looking at girls for thousands of years. Anyone that is failing school because of their libido is an idiot, and would probably go to sniffing glue if there was nothing to look at.

The whole thing just boils down to the school district trying to stop teenage sex, and believe it or not, covering up is not going to stop anything. They will see these girls outside of school regardless, and that is where you tend to have sex. Texan schools need to realize their kids cant read because their parents cant read, not sex.

I agree with Chez. What they wear outside of the classroom is no one's buiseness.

But inside the schools I think there should be a more modest type of clothing. I went to a uniformed school as well, and truthfully it wasn't that bad. People judged you for YOU, not because of what you were wearing. It really removed alot of the cliques in the school system.

I'm not saying that that is what this highschool should do, but I see nothing wrong with the school saying that there can't be plunging necklines. I also think they should add that there can't be any ultramini skirts, or the ultra low-rise jeans. I think it's tasteless to have your thong showing out of your pants when you sit. (in a classroom, job, etc... outside of work/school... whatever floats your boat).

I think it boils down to a certain measure of respect and whatever.

I think it is very interesting that you bring this subject up. The thong thing is just rediculous. I don't see how those things are comfortable anyways. Only guys with short attention spans can't keep up with there work. Whaz up with the gangster sagging thing as well. So what I know the color of your underwear now, big deal, that dosen't make you pimpin. I think that women should be more respectable to themselves and not try to be the center of attention to men 24/7. There are other things in life ladies..........

Thongs hurt. Anyways I completly agree with both sides in this case. Men are going to be distracted by the opposite sex no matter what, and students are always going to want to dress the way that they want to if a dress code is not inforced. An I think that people an children have the right to wear whatever they please. Being judged is the least of their problems.

However, I think that the "slut look" is not appropriate for schools in anyway shape or form. There is a fine line between shorts an daisy dukes. An I think it makes a lot of people feel uncomfortable if people are allowed to dress with their thongs hanging out . So I am For a dress code, and school uniforms (I live in Texas). I think it forces people to look deeper in people to find friends. If you are a stoner than they know it by how you act, if you are a prep they will know if they want to be friends with you by that.

However I also think that as far as college goes.....there should be a dress code, but never school uniforms.

Every school has this problem. Thing is, school uniform is made to look trendy by clothes shops, so students look and feel good in their uniform. This is why I didn't have much of a problem when I used to wear it. It feels good to be able to wear a fitted blouse with fitted bootleg trousers and a nice belt, or a nice skirt. The trouble is when people abuse the appropriate system that things get out of hand.

Yep, in my school you get the sluts. One girl, for example, you could barely see her skirt from underneath her blazer it was so short! Theres also the people who have most of their buttons undone so everyone can see their breasts. Its like they're posing for a porno mag, where there clothes will become less and less. I do have an issue with people like this. The poor pubescent boys, lesbians, and even general students get distracted whether or not they are attracted to the person or not. Teachers also must find it hard to teach students who look like theyre posing for a swimsuit contest.

My school has now inforced a good dress code, where there is a distinct uniform which can be bought as a set from the local school shop. The blouses are fitted, and the skirts are pencil skirts. This gives the comfy feel without the sluttiness. People who abuse the rules will get sent home to change, and the parents told about it. Sixthform are also not allowed to wear skimpy clothes, as the older students who don't wear uniform and are role-models for the youngsters. In every school there will be sluts, it can't be helped, but an effective solution should be derived.

As for out-of-school, I still think it is unnecisary. Mid-thigh skirts and little tops are ok, as long as the skirts arent too skimpy as are the tops. We dont have too much of a problem in my town, but in one of the local towns nearby, which is a large coastal cosmopolitan area, you get many girls going around in bikinis. Its a "dream" to some guys, yet they are basically walking around with stickers saying "rape me". If my friend got groped when she was wearing jeans and t-shirt while waiting for a bus (I am witness to that), then what happens to these slutty girls? I dread to think what goes through their minds, and how they feel comfertable with a load of people oggling them.

(Well, if the thong is 100% cotton, it doesn't hurt. Fairly comfortable. But I dunno how sessi that would be coming out of pants. )

It seems that the school district is trying to make up for what parents are lacking. Parents should be able to teach their kids what's appropriate to wear and when different things are acceptable. I would feel downright uncomfortable in itty bitty clothes while I sat in a classroom. But really. Parents let their kids buy this stuff at such a young age that by the time they're older, there's not much to mature into.

But like I said, there is a time and place for what clothes you wear. For school, you should have something more conservative in mind. It's just polite. The law will probably help with school attire; but overall, it's up to the students to get a little self-respect, and to the parents to take more care in raising their kids.

Also, I do think boys need a little attention in this matter too. Pull up your pants, and wear something with sleaves to school. I can't tell you how grossed out I was by people wearing baggy jeans with boxers hanging out with their little wife beaters on and armpit hair hanging out. Men, I don't want to be able to see whether or not you put deodorant on this morning. Cottage cheese looking bullshit...

Women probably get more attention because well... I mean... boobs? Sometimes you just can't look away. But I do think boys need a little lesson in dressing a little classier as well. To school, anyway. Outside of school, do what you want. I don't have to see you, I don't care. But if I have to see you, I don't want to see your boobs, and I don't want to see your armpit hair or asscrack.

Heh.

When I was in highschool, this wasn't so much of a problem. Note now that I live in Arlington, and that my sister is directly affected by this new rule, since she's a sophomore in highschool this year.

Seems like the group my age was a bit more mature. There was very little problem with breaking of dress code -- and I do agree, there's something very appealing about leaving things to the imagination.

I noticed during my senior year that a lot of the freshman dressed very... sluttily, for lack of a better word. Many of the girls looked like tramps. It was a bit disappointing, to be honest. The guys, too. If your pants are around your knees, maybe you need some pants that actually fit you.

I haven't been around the highschools too much since I graduated, but just by watching my sister's friends when they come around, it's amazing what they've been getting away with in school. I'm glad to see the district attempt to enforce changes. Some of you may not think it's necessary, but when a third of the males in schools around here are failing classes because they're too busy lusting after whores, there's a problem.

Well, guys such as I always struggle with lust. Sometimes I catch myself thinking perverted thoughts over a random hot girl I see and having them wear less clothes doesn't exactly help.

I know it's perfectly normal for a teenage guy, but for most it's going out of control.

I think girls are inspired alot by girls that dance seductively in music videos or celebrities in magazines giving girls tips on how to get guys to notice them.

Well, it works, but I wish it didn't.
It's just a sad world we live in. I honestly do wish girls would dress more modestly, because I hate struggling with lust.

I approve of that law.

I don't care, when I was 3rd form I figured all the 5th 6th and 7th form girls were hot and it had nothing to do with whether they dressed like a total whore bag or whatever. Also we had to wear a uniform to 7th form, and by the time I got there I realised that in actual fact most other 7th form girls were ugly and so were most of the 6th formers but there were a lot of hot ones.

Either was I don't chase after girls for how much make up they splatter on their face or how much clevage they are showing. If they have a nice set of boobs and/or ass they are going to get stared at pretty much no matter what they are wearing (unless it gets into multiple layers). Its the way they act that mostly goes down to it, and I think most of the stereotyping is absolute bull. The two hottest girls I have met where quite intelligent, just thought I'd throw that out there.

Well, honestly, my opinion is that while it is true that it is no one's business that people wear certain clothes out of school, it is when they are in school. I mean, it's a problem that they are wearing clothes that are revealing, but that is not what I think is the main problem. I think it's a problem of morals. I mean, if you are revealing your body to everyone like that, what does that show other people? It shows others that you have no self respect. Self respect is a key aspect of our lives. It makes me shudder to think so many people dress just like that. So it's a breath of fresh air when a ban like that is made.

Or, perhaps, on the other side of the coin, a girl has so much self-respect for herself that, maybe, just maybe, she dresses that way because she wants to. And maybe likes to, regardless of other people's opinions and thoughts. And I'm not saying about dressing like a trashbag. Hell no. Nobody wants to dress like that. I'm talking about tasteful clothing. Clothing that makes a girl look high-maintenance and all that.

But anyway, I'll have to agree with the flock that in-school is a no-no-zone for cleavage and sluttiness. Keep that stuff outside. The highschool I went to was lucky enough to just have a dresscode, and no uniforms. It was ghetto. The dresscode wasn't even really enforced, either. So I got to see several females wear revealing outfits, but of course, I wasn't stupid enough to get distracted.

A majority of the girls wore modest clothing. But the few that wore revealing clothing.. yep, were the whores of the school. A majority of the guys, though, were ghetto as well. Wearing baggy pants, etc. Very few dressed nicely.
