well my ps2 is at the ripe old age of about 5 years old. my ps2 served me faithfully through the years. for about the first four years it never had any problems. i took very good care of my ps2 and about 4 years after i got my ps2 i noticed alot of my ps1 games werent playing.(i had just bought ff8 after about a year trying to find it). it was a used game and it was a little scratched but not any thing to bad. i tried to put it in and it gave me my first disc read error. i ignored it thinking i probbably had to get a new game because my ps2 was a little old and it would only play perfect games. well luckily i found a new one and it worked...for bit.i had just bought i new version of ff9when i noticed it kept giving me disc read error. well i took the thing aprt and gave it thorough cleaning. after i cleaned the lens with rubbing ahcohol it worked good as new. about a month ago my freinds ps2 started having major problems. first dvd's wouldnt work and then psone games slowly it started dieing. he called sony and they told him how to fix it but it only worked for a bit. we tried every thing to fix it but the thing just didnt work. luckily about a month after it tottally died he got a newer slimmer ps2. then exactly as he got his ironicially mine broke. we got our ps2 around the same time. now mine is having the same symptoms as his. the disc i put in are perfectly clean and i tried averything for cleaning the laser to adjusting the lens with the white wheel. none of them worked. i heard that sony got sued for making the blue backed disc actually designed to break the system. at first i wondered why they would want there systems to break. i figured they would want them to last a long time. i didnt think any one would actually go to the lengths of buying a brand new system. i looked at many forums about this and actually figured out many have had multipple playstations. the reason i chose the ps2 is because they have the best software. i also heard the new slim ps2's actually work much better and i havent heard of one having problems. i figured after they had gotten in bit of trouble sont offered better system. the only games im really interested in playing are my psone ff games(until ff 12 comes out) should i just buy a regualar psone or just buy a new slim ps2 altogether?please give me suggestions on what i should do i hate sony!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've heard so many people talk about how they're xobox didn't last over a year even if they kept it in the best condition possile.

693 | Yet I've had my xbox sitting on a rack with many other systems and electronic devices getting little to no ventilation and it's still working like new after several years of hard use. Companies don't design things to break after a certain period of use. Sure they knowingly use parts that will wear out but they don't sit and think "lets cut a notch in this so that 3 years or 3000hours of play exactly the part will fail causing catastrophic failure of the product".

| | My PS2 is also about that age, probably a bit older, and I've had no issues at all with it. I mean, it does occasionally lag when it's reading discs but I'm fairly certain that my mom either dropped my PS2 or hit it with the vacuum, so I'm not surprised. -_-; It's either that or because it's summer, and it doesn't like heat and humidity lol. I know I sure don't. If it's having a disc reading error for both PS1 and PS2 games then there is a good chance that the laser eye got knocked off its track. That's what happened to my GameCube, so now I have to buy a new one. *le sigh* If it's just PS1 games, then maybe check a troubleshooting guide or call a Sony support tech to see if it's something that can be easily fixed? ~DragonHeart~ | ||||||||

| | The slim PS2 actually have more problems than the original since they were thinner they over heated a lot. This was one of the major issues, also disc errors. I was looking at getting one when my PS2 was having trouble reading anything. But everywhere I went had none because people were returning them to get replaced. Plus people were buying them up like crazy. Anyway, I cleaned my PS2 lens and vacuumed it up. Probably spent like 30 minutes or more cleaning it. Closed it up, plugged it in and works like a charm now. Before I did not read PSone or DVDs and most of my PS2 disc as well. Now it reads everything. Though I have a PSone since it is apparently well known fact that PSone kill the PS2 len faster than anything else. It is not really meant to be playing PSone games. Seems a little strange. If you do, just means you'll have to clean it. I am not sure about DVDs, but they might dirty up the len as well. If you play a lot of PSone games then the len probably needs to be cleaned. I have had my PS2 for four years now I think, after I returned a defective one. I have since got myself a DVD player, so it is not a DVD player anymore, but at the time it was awesome. Anyway, my PS2 probably will last me another few years I hope. Probably will need some regular cleaning, but other than that it is solid. But Sony does make fragile equipment. In a physical stress test of the machines, ie dropping it and beating it up, the PS2 will lose first everytime. But hey, you drop your computer or knock it around it will probably stop working too. You want reliable, Nintendo, you can melt them and they'll still work. We will be dead and our Gameboys will still be running. They'll probably be running the world. Anyway, Sony's redeeming factor as always been they got the games, it is why people will buy a new console.

Anyway, even though my PS2 isn't as old, being only two and a half years old, mine hasn't given me any problem other than refusing to read my FFIX, and that, only, because, as I discovered later, the discs were filthy, so, no I don't think that they are designed to autodestruct in five minutes, errr... years.

| Mistress of Succubi | My PS2 was bought used. I used it for 4 years without any problems. I got DREs for just 2 games. And they were both purple-backs. (They looked more purple than blue.) By the way, I was the one who told Andro to clean his lens. I linked him to a page that gave step by step instructions on how to do it, depending on the model they had. But anyway, that's not the point. My point is, something probably happened to bork up your PS2. Mine has never had any problems aside from a few DREs. And even then, I just cleaned the lens and it worked like new. But I got into modding, and had to exchange my PS2 because it was a wrong model type for what I wanted to mod with. So I exchanged it for another used PS2, and it still works like new. Except it has a green fliptop case. And you know, don't forget that the first models of the PS2 were faulty. So if you got them when they first came out, well.. there you go. That's why I never get my consoles when they first come out. I always wait for the second or third wave. I got my Gamecube used, at 80$. PS2 used, with 3 games and a carrying case, 200$ flat. (Twas the only one left in the store, I got lucky. Someone reserved it but never picked it up. So I got to have it.) N64, used. Dreamcast, used. GBA SP, new. PSOne, new. (has been modded.) But yeah.. I sold my cast and N64, though. Never played them anymore, so I figured why bother to keep them. Anyway.. the point of the whole post is that not all PS2s have your problems. I'm technically still on my "first" ps2. And I got my PS2 way back in 2002, July, when I graduated from Highschool. | ||||||||

341 | My PS2 lasted 1 year before it stopped reading DVDs. Another 2 before a few games stopped working, and 1 more before everything fell apart. I took the PS2 apart and spent a day and a half cleaning it and putting it back together. Everything worked fine besides the DVDs (they still don't work). I had already bought a new PS2 Slim by that time so I traded the one I cleaned for an XBox! Everything worked out famously....

| Mistress of Succubi | Oh, and just so everyone knows. Regardless of advertisements, PS2s are not meant to read/play PS1 or DVD discs. And never keep it on Standby. Always shut it off when you don't use it. (Slim, the lens was probably just off track.) But if you keep your PS2 to just play PS2 games, they'll last practically forever, if you occasionally clean the lens, etc. | ||||||||

| Mistress of Succubi | California. And no, not so much overheating issues. More like heat staying issues. Just trust me on this. Never leave it on standby. Not only is it a waste of electricity, but it puts wear on it. Same with playing DVDs and PS1 games. Sure it can play them, but it borks the lens. | ||||||||

382 | Oh, well, it seems that I've been doing all the wrong stuff to that dear PS2. Regularly. I wonder how long it will last before it croaks due to my gross missuse? I asked you about the location, because I thought we might be neighbors, and yes we are, since I'm from Upland.

I never knew about the whole Standby issues. I guess I'll be reaching for the other switch from now on. Funny thing is, my DVD player can't play DVDs either. ![]()
