July 17, 2006 - Japan's Nikkei Net news service reported today that Square Enix is currently working on a sequel to Final Fantasy XI. The next-generation massively multiplayer online RPG is being developed for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows Vista formats. Further details are not provided (including whether or not said sequel is a direct follow-up to the adventures of Vana'diel or if it isn't).

Square Enix has previously shown trailers for a next-generation MMORPG engine without actually announcing a final product based around the engine. It's unclear if the FFXI sequel is going to be the game to use the new engine, or if Square Enix has another title in development.

Just give me Mithra Songstress and Lady Luck jobs and I'm happy.

So they need to make a million expansion packs and now a sequel. Square needs to work more on original games instead of spawning sequels.

It is not necessarily a sequel. And when it comes to MMORPGs, you can't really make a sequel per se, since the first technically does not end. But whatever you want to call it, MMOs are in a different genre, so calling them sequel would not be completely accurate. Not that it really matters, if it improves FFXI and adds a lot of more things, especially some of the issues the previous had. Then it will be a solid game.

Depends if they are building from scratch or not on this. I am still pretty FFXI is the last MMO for me, but who knows FFXI-2 might change that opinion.

We still have yet to see the "western" and "southern" continents, as well as the Far Eastern, which is beyond Aht Urhgan of the newly released expansion.

Final Fantasy XI is far from finished. Let's not forget that Treasure of Aht Urhgan missions have only just begun. We have a long road ahead of us to explore in the world of Vana'diel.

I did saw the screens of this so-called next generation MMORPG title. Just by the looks already I'm interested in it. I kind of doubt it will be a XI-2, but nevertheless, it seems to be a graphically pleasing title. I am looking forward to it. And really, it can never really be official until Square Enix themself announce it. I will be keeping my eyes on this matter.

I'd like to see a FF MMO in Ivalice with the races and jobs from FFTA. I just think playing a Bangaa Templar would be too cool, as well as a Viera Assassin or Elementalist.

That's definitely interesting news. I only got FFXI recently (more of an EQ person ) and I'm a bit lacking in motivation to really get into it. A completely new game would definitely be more appealing, especially if the graphics don't use tha PS2 as the lowest common denominator

wow(world of warcraft) is juast now coming out with their first expasion pack but there game is insanley popular... more popular then ff11.

Today, Square Enix made the announcement that they are not making a sequel to FFXI. They are making a new MMO, it is just not FFXI related. And probably not FF related. But no sequel to FFXI.

FFXI is also a few years older than WoW so it's not surprising that it's ahead in expansion packs. Blizzard's strategy of waiting 2 years to release the first expansion is by no means the standard in the MMO industry where most games don't even last that long. And many high level WoW players have been wishing for an expansion to be released much sooner.

I would be surprised if it wasn't a Final Fantasy title, to be honest.

The fact that they're distancing themselves from a "sequel" just shows some caution. MMO sequels haven't done terribly well so far. Asheron's Call 2 was a complete failure, and EverQuest II took its precious time to find its spot in the market. Lineage 2 could be considered a success in Asia, but in the US and Europe the enthusiasm is rather lackluster.

I expect that the game will end up being a separate Final Fantasy title. With its own world, rather than a future or past Vana'diel. That way FFXI fans wouldn't end up being disappointed, expecting an FFXI remake with better graphics, and players who haven't played FFXI wouldn't be put off by a game that "they haven't played the first part of".
