Haha. I call a drink by it's fucking brand name. I don't call anything soda, because in Australia, mineral water is soda water. Yeah, I don't get it either. I will call drinks by their name, nothing else. Less confusing that way.

Yeah, I agree with Jet. I call a soda by it's name. In Australia we tend to call soda 'softdrink'. I have no idea how it got that name but there you go. I hardly ever call it softdrink because it sounds lame, I mainly call all of it by its brand name, it makes things easier. A lot of people actually call it by its brand name over here... well most of the people I know.

See, in the south, everything is "a coke." Waitresses in the south will ask you "What kind?" if you tell them you want a coke. I usually say Sprite.

I have relatives from west Texas and they say sody pop. I hate the way that sounds. It's just.....weird.

Yeah, it's sort of a Southern thing to refer to all carbonated drinks as "coke." I don't know why we figured that was for the best. I suppose that down here, the less syllables, the better. Pfft. Soda.

I actually don't even think about it. Sometimes I'll be specific, sometimes I'll say "a coke." Depends on the context. Now that I really think about it, I've started drifting more towards calling the drinks by their brand names.

But it doesn't reeeaaally matter, because I don't drink much coke (see that?) anymore anyway.

But sweet tea! How amazing.

The term "soft drink" came around because hard drinks involved liquors. So any flavored beverage that didn't have liquor became a soft drink. It makes sense, but at the same time, it doesn't make sense. If... that makes any sense at all.

Ok.... most of my family is from northern Louisiana and they call all sodas just that... "soda". So I grew up calling them that too.
My husband was born and raised in West Central Texas. His favorite drink? Dr. Pepper. What does he ask for? "coke". Uh, yeah....
The first time I heard "pop" was in Montana, the summer after 8th grade.... ages ago now. She asked me if I wanted a pop. Well, down here that means you are about to get a "pop in the mouth" so to speak, or a good hit across the face... halirity ensued when we got it straightened out.
Strangely enough, because my sisters spent more time on this side of the Sabine than I did, they call everything "coke" as well, but we understand each other better I think.

Carbonated Beverages. That's what we call them in this London/near London part of England.

Okay, seriously. I just say "Fizzy drinks" if I'm speaking of them collectively, otherwise they're just whatever their brand name is.

Well, In Germany we call all coke-like beverages "Cola". If you were to ask for "Coke", you'd literally be asking for the white powdery substance that get's you high and burns holes through your nosebridge.

In Germany we have something to refer to all Sprite-like lemony or Fanta-like orange carbonated beverages with. We just say "Limo", which is short for Limonade, which quite basically is a translation of lemonade I guess although we don't have lemonade in the US tradition. Our lemonade is just like I said, a carbonated Sprite-like drink/Fanta-like drink.

When I lived in the states, they always referred to carbonated beverages as "soda" or "pop" in Utah and just plain "soda" in California. Only queers used those words in conjunction though and usually got gay-bashed for it. I've never heard them referred to as Coke as a whole though. That's just retarded.

I use the word soda. Always have, always will. I hate the word pop. Pop is what a balloon does, not something you drink.

If someone asks for a coke, I will give them a Coca-cola. If they ask for soda, I ask for a brand name. Simple as that.

P.S. I do live in Minnesota. The stereotypical accent is, sadly, true.
