What does everyone think about alternate fuel sources? Do you think that by the time eco-cars are affordable, it will be too late? The truth is that I really don't care about how you answer those questions, I just didn't want a spam warning for commenting on that guy's post. ^

So did I, but Mama Cass might warn me for a one liner. Oh no!

They need to make more fuel efficient cars for one reason: my pocket. I cannot afford three dollars a gallon. It is perfectly acceptable for the ozone to be destroyed for my benefit, but when I cannot live it up on a Friday night because of the gas prices, I start to get heated.

It probably wont be for a decade or so that we see these cars commonly.

I think that the human race will be gone LONG before Earth explodes/implodes.
Although people are trying to recycle (which i think has been proven to do **** all) and most of the countries are doing their bit to try and use alternative energy sources, there are a few countries *cough* America *cough* that refuse to do so.
Im guessing if we all worked together to stop at least maybe 20 to 30% of the pollution thats going on it would help drasticly but I really doubt we can even do that.

When the body is attacked by viruses and bacteria, it sends out antibodies to destroy the foreign microbe attacking it's system. Who is to say that cancer and natural disasters aren't the earth's immune virus kicking in against us humans???

I personally don't think cancer could be the cause of everybody dying. Many people do suffer, yes, but what you need to remember is that cancer takes a while to go throughout the body and organs to kill somebody off. Also, we have cures for cancer, and are perfecting new ways to combat cancer.

In anyway case, natural disasters are probably our best bet. Although I don't think we'll die off... People have been saying the Earth will die for years now, and so far, only the Tsunami a few years ago has really been the only true natural disaster that was enough to wipe out such a big place -- and even Indonesia and Sri Lanka are still standing.

I was not saying that Cancer and the such would be the death of mankind, only using it as an example of my theory. The earth will come up with a better way to kill us off, but the earth will kill us just like an infection in her skin.

Gah not used to talk here in ID, but meh, might as well give it a shot.

Lot of things have been discussed so far, reacting on a few them.

I seriously hate the mentality of the people that are like "everybody's littering up the world, so I won't stop"...
You won't stop being mentally retarded till the rest does...

I'm staying in Japan now for a month (not saying they are doing perfect on all aspects of world preservance, but meh) and it's the cleanest country I have ever seen, you see an occasional can in a corner of a street, but 99% of the times everything is friggin clean, and everybody helps to keep it that way.

Back to Holland, few people mentiond it already, but yeah I actually live there usually. Big part of Holland is under the current sea level and we keep the water in control by using dams, dunes etc. We got our occasional town that floods, but meh it works for now.
But if the water would rise a lot more then we might get ****ed up, hehe.
There are windmills all around Holland, which take care of quite some extra energy, Holland has been doing really well on alternative energy sources.

Comment to somebody who talked about physics that the water level would actually drop if the ice caps melt.....that's retarded, sorry to say.
Yes it's true that water expands when it melts, but you forget to grasp the idea that most of the ice is above sea level instead of already in the sea, so it will drop down in the sea and of course it will rise, allthough it takes up less space, it's now in the sea instead of above sea level.

One thing that sort of pisses me off though, last month they made some new gasoline for cars that was actually loads less damaging for the environment. The catch? it was 1.5 times as expensive as normal gasoline, well yeah...that's not really good eh. Most people will always go for the cheaper option simply cause the money doesn't grow on trees.
Same reason why loads of places are doing too less with alternative energy sources, cause the oil companies etc. are making proper money right now, which they don't want to give up.

As to the answer of the actual name of this thread, I am not sure. Of course if things go as planned, either we will evolve into something superior to humans, it has always gone like that. We evolve/adapt. Or we will be the cause of our own extinction.
World powers nowadays can get pretty messed up with eachother.
500 years ago, what was there to do to **** up the world? You could always slaughter a city or something, but that was it.
Since the invention of nuclear weapons it's an entire different story though, look at Nagasaki and Hiroshima at 1945.
And hell even look at Tyernobyl. It's still impossible to live in a close radius to Tyernobyl cause of the high radiation.
Events like that make me believe that there's a big chance that we will be the cause of our own extinction.
With all the nuclear weapons available in the world as it is of now, what would happen if fanatics would decide to use loads of them at the same time?
Let's put it like this....they have evolved as well since 1945, they can do more damage even than the atomic bombs of that time.
You never know who will get their hands on the wrong weapons.
Loads of fanatic religious people think that the afterlife is the actual life anyways, so why would they care about this planet?

Ah well, my 2 cents...

Peace out

there is one point you lot are missing, when this earth was first around the atmosphere could not support life but then through a long chain of reaction the atmosphere became similer to ours today now those gasses at the start of the earth is on the rise maybe the planet is going on a cycle? but im not ruling out pollution

Ow yes the world would be able to filter the air again, start the cycle entirely again, that won`t be a problem. It`s not like mankind would be able to make all water vanish or something, life will always remain somewhere in the water....somewhere down deep.
Allthough in billions of years...longass time in the future Earth will vanish anyways, since the sun will be out of energy and implode.

Peace out

Usagy- Water expands when it freezes, not when it melts. Also, more water= higher sea level. I don't understand your idea about how the ice will "go under into the sea". Please clarify.
