While I believe in the Rapture, Tribulation, etc. mentioned in the Book of Revelations -- meaning, the earth and our earthly bodies will both outlive their usefulness -- I suppose that doesn't pertain too much to the argument here.

Odin -- Nuclear Winter isn't just winter. It's not a matter of it being a few degrees colder than normal. It's a matter of all plant matter dying and all fresh water sources freezing. We wouldn't survive Nuclear Winter.

But more importantly ... while "Global Warming" does indeed exist, there's nothing proving it's not the earth's natural cycle. According to some scientists, the earth has been heating up and cooling down for millions and even billions of years -- why is it such a big deal that it's still doing it? Global Warming has been blown WAY out of proportion, and there's no telling the countless number of lies that have been told to make it seem like a huge problem. I've heard stories about sea levels rising anywhere from twenty feet to six hundred feet -- and even some evidence that points to sea levels falling if the ice caps and such melted (which, if you know much about physics and the expansive properties of water, kinda makes sense). The way I figure, it's not nearly as much of a problem as it's being made out to be. It's a scare tactic. Just like the "Global Cooling" scare that was tried in the 70s, but I'm sure most of us don't know about that. Same concept, prettymuch.

Well it depends on the extent, if say is was a small war between the USA and Iraq it could possibly reach temperatures similar to Canada during the Winter across the equator, a lot of people would indeed die but there would be some people to survive. But if it was on a World War scale then who knows, perhaps only Bacteria would survive. I personally wouldn't care if the world became similar to the Ice-ages, there is like 6 Billion humans on the planet, apparently the Earth has enough resources to keep a constant flow of 500million at any given time. This would be nessecary for keeping the earth/human cycle going stable (providing we didn't move to outta space).

And I agree about Global Warming being a scare factor, there is indeed problems but unless it became a burning situation then no doubt humans will just adjust, as natural selection takes place.

in scinece were doing global warming now and it is something that all humans should fear. Remember the heatwave of 2003, well in 2080 that would be seen as a cool summer. The earths only going to get warmer if we don't get rid of all this carbon dioxide building up in our atmosphere. if we can find away to get rid of it are problems would be solved but i doubt anyone has invented a machine or divice that can suck in or absorb this green house gas.

We have to main choses: we can either lower our carbon emissions or we carry on the way were going a roast alive!

Mate, you seriously belive we'll adjust to; devastating tropical storms, heat waves, polar caps melting thus raising sea level and when all this really start it will only get worse and there is nothing anybody can do because it is to late.

And think about this, countries like Holland getting completely washed away because most of the country is under today's sea level.

A scenario like this will no doubt be devastating to our way of life, to make a historical example look at Easter Island. Nothing lives there anymore, the forests are gone, the 3-5000 people who lived there has died and skeletons was scattered all over the place when the end got closer and closer.
Global warming had nothing to do with it but the biggest reason was deforestation and that is indeed happening all over the world today raising global temperature even further.

i dont think it will survive. people care too much about themselves than the environment, so they pollute and kill living things. I mean... think of the oil being dumped in the ocean or the many pieces of trash you see lying on the ground as you barely walk outside. I dont think the earth will survive for much longer, though I'm hoping it will.

Well, the human race is a pathetic species at that, although it can be admired by its will to live, as self-centered as this is.

So, yes if humans, continue to be humans, then they will find a way to excel and escape the boundaries of this planet.

The only flaw in my point that I can see if if a Earth destroying event suddenly occurs (And it is very hard to destroy the Earth) then humans will naturally die with it.

Although then again, many intellegent minds have said that humans are an adaptable race.

Oh, and Boris the Blade, I don't believe this discussion was supposed to impose upon religious beliefs.

I agree with a lot of the previous posts, the question is not whether the earth will survive the human race, but whether the human race will survive the human race. There is almost nothing we could do to this planet without causing ourselves to cease to exist. And the planet will most likely be here long after we are gone. Whatever we do to the planet will just be making it uninhabitable to ourselves. After we are gone there will be another species that will rise to dominate the planet. We are but a stepping stone in time for the earth. I mean really, how can something whose lifespan is measured in centuries possibly seriously affect something whose lifespan is measured in epochs and eons???

I don't have much to really add here, but I think that the earth will last longer than the things living on it. It has been pummled by meteors, and lasted through our earth shaking bombs, and let's not forget Churnoble. I probably did not spell that right. The earth has always lasted even when it's inhabitants have not. Global warming doesn't kill the earth....it kills earth's people. As with radioactivity in certian area's. It might be that one day nothing will live on earth because it has been raped, but not because it couldn't take it. Earth does not need the things that we do. Therefore it cannot be affected in the ways we can. That includes death. Unless of course we get hit by the sun or something.

Lai Lai Hei, for your question earlier. I will make a thread, or perhaps you would where we can debate this, I think it is a good thread for intellectual discussion, 'Are Humans a Pathetic Race?' I am busy at the moment, so if you would.

The material is a substance called Technetium 99 and originates from a facility in England called Sellafield, and we all probobly know that radioactive substances is long around before it starts to dissapear, this particular substance will be around for over 200 years and it's not getting any better even though Sellafield has reduced their pollution drastically.

Another thought, global warming a well known problem. In Switzerland reports came out last year about their glaziers melting.
I don't remember anyfigures but there have been a significant reduction in their all year glaziers. As you may or may not know Switzerland is a country at around 3000 MoH (9000 ft over the sea)
Also in Norway we have similar problems and if the glaziers around the world would melt (this is indeed a possible scenario) the sea level will rise by 80 mtrs (240feet) and this would leave cities like New York and even a country like Holland completely under water.
The only problem about global waming is not just the glaziers but the polar caps, they are melting fast too. Last year scientists reported that the all year caps on the north pole have been reduced with an area so big it was compared to the British islands, also if the temperature on earth rises even further there will be more tropical storms no only that but there will even be tropical storms in countries like Norway or countries near the south pole.

This is just some examples of what may happen and what is happening while we pollute and rape our planet, I would love to see any comments and such on this subject.
look the worlds not going to end.

Firstly, Drawing on my GCSE geography...The world goes through bouts of cooling down and heating up, we are in one of those natural heating up cycles now, pollution has increased this drastically but chances are that the ice caps would melt anyway.

This next sections a bit hazy, maybe -XU- (i know she always listened in our geography classes ) could be more precise but on the rivers in London during the 17-1800's (?) there was a celebration called the 'frost fair' this was when the thames (?) froze over completley allowing stalls, dances and whatever else happens in an ye olde englishe fair to be present on top of the ice. Now by i would say it was 1850 latest (again very hazy it may of even been 1900's) the rivers melted and didnt freeze to the extent that they previously did. This made it dangerous to travel on the ice and so the frost fair was disbanded.

As far as i know there wasnt wide spread coal, oil and gas being burnt at this time showing the natural heating up period. Theoretically the Earth will got through a natural cooling cycle (the ice age was one of these i think) after it has gone up to its hottest. Pollution of course would drastically increase the chance of the Earth being, if you will 'destroyed' by us. I do however think that this is a minor possibility as renewable/flow resouces are used more and more often making the use of these fund resources such as coal and oil and gas (lots of and's) redundant.

there are however (without going into renewable resources) limits that wind power can be used i believe its 25% but again very hazy, after the exam i proceded to forget everything possible and focus on more important things such as lord of the rings and forums.

Sorry if the data is incorrect or not accurate.
