I tried search the net but I couldn't find the answer. Ok so I want to be a bard so there is no way to pick a Bard in create a character? Also like if I'm lvl 30 and I do the bard quest will I become a bard and no longer be a red mage? Because I wanted to be a Bard with a sub-job of redmage but I don't understand how it work. ![]()

| | the way it works in FFXi is that you are able to switch between any job freely. You can't choose Bard as the first job, because it is an advanced job. When you get to thirty, you can do the quest for any advanced job, and when that quest is completed, you can choose that job to play, but, if you want to be something else, you can switch to it. That seems sort of confusing, so let me describe a situation. Say you start with a Red Mage. You level that all the way to thirty. At thirty, you can start the quests to get all of the additional jobs, Bard included. You complete all the quests, and now, when ever you want to be that job, you can change to it from your Mog House. And if you get bored with it, you go back to your Mog House and change to something else. You're not restricted to what job you can be, as you are in WoW and most other MMO's.

| Magically Delicous | A bit of a side-note... I wouldn't recommend Red Mage as a subjob for Bard. All of your spells would be nerfed. Black Magic spells would be resisted and you wouldn't have key White Magic spells like Paralyna nor would your Cure spells be unlocked as early as subbing White Mage. Sure, not everyone loves leveling White Mage... but there's a reason that most Bards choose it... it works quite well. Now, if you want to solo some stuff, feel free to use whatever sub-job you want.. But, in a party, I would recommend White Mage. You can be whatever you want in the game... but as most of us have learned... the amount of invites you get is influenced by your main job and also greatly affected by the subjob you are using. Its an unfortunate fact of the game. Not that I mind really... I wouldn't want to party with a WHM/SAM for instance... that's just... indescrible... Anywho... you don't have to take my word for it. If it works for you... great. Just saving you quite a few headaches.. XD | ||||||||

10 | Hmmm. So if I be bard I gotta be only support? What class is a jack of all trades? I wanna fight but also cast a few spells. Like a battlemage or something. OR hmm does white mage or bard have attack spells or anything like that. I wanna be a sword user that can also cast a few spells. Or a support that can also cast a few attack spells when needed. | The Old Skool Warrior | Red Mage is certainly the jack of all trades. There is no rounder class than RDM. If you want to do a little bit of everything, that's the way to go -- though I'll tell you right now, even RDM tends to be more support and less attack in the higher levels. Of course Bards are strictly support characters. Their only job is to boost the party's stats, and lower the enemy's stats.

10 | see i thought being a bard would boost the weakness of being a jack of all trades a bit. But i still wanna be a bard though so do I become a white mage til im lvl 30 then switch to bard and make white mage my sub? Also are bard/whm in demand? I like to be support if there's a high need for them. Last edited by Rswave2k2; 06-30-2006 at 12:02 AM.

| Magically Delicous | Once you get to around level 40 or so as Red Mage, your ability to melee in a party is pretty much gone. Sure, you can melee with En-spells and do some damage(specifically with weaponskills which still kick ass), but overall many parties will consider you simply 'spamming up the monster tp'. The parties I've been in, they let me melee if I want... but lately I end up being the Main Healer and attacking the mob directly is rather stupid if you are Main Healer... ^_^ In the end, Red Mage is still the jack-of-all trades... more-so solo later on. In a party, you become the Refresh-Whore... the Enfeeble-Whore... and/or the Healer-Whore. So really, you're nothing more than a multitasking whore.. XD I make it sound bad, but its still the most fun job I've played. I am never sitting still. I'm enfeebling the monster, sleeping its friends that tag along, Dispelling any buffs the monster casts on itself, boosting the MP of the mages, back-up healing, boosting my own stats, and if I have a spare second, wacking the monster with a sword/spoon. Red Mage is a fun job. It takes some skill to be a great Red Mage. It might look easy, but if you flinch... you'll know about it rather quickly. "Refresh Me!!!" "Dispel the monster!!" "Sleep the link!!!" etc... For me, parties might do that the first few pulls because they are used to shitty RDMs.. but once they see what I can do, they shut up. I'm not bragging by any means... its just a simple matter. You have to be patient and willing to take criticism. On the other hand, people just worship Bards. You will get Party Invites like nuts... ZOMG! LOOK AT MY STATS!! A Bard could suck ass and many parties pay little attention. They let Bards run all over them with insane demands just so they can get those boosts. The most stuck-up players I've met were Bards... No, not all are... but there are quite a few. If you want to be Bard, thats great... but please do me a favor and be a nice Bard... not an asshat.. XD I hope I didn't confuse you.. haha. They are both good jobs. | ||||||||

Sometimes you'll see SMN/WHM take the role of primary healer because most people abuse Summoners for the high MP count, and often fail to use the class as it's meant to be played.

10 | The Red Mage sounds fun but I would like people kissing my ass as a Bard. But you said a bad bard gets paid little attention. Do you mean it's very easy to play a bard? It's so funny that you say Bard are stuck up and they have high demands. It's like they are some celebrity. I do like that Red Mages multi task. And if they suck then people can tell and that they require skill. So I'm still undecided. Do bards just cast a spell and just do nothing? Or do brd/whm are busy in parties. I don't just wanna sit back cast 1-2 spells and just wait for everyone else to kill. Like if monsters do alot of dmg and I have to heal alot and cast buffs or each person it make seem like fun. If not though I'm going to be a Red Mage. If I become a Bard I will be the nicest and most sought out one. And whats a good sub for RDM? Last edited by Rswave2k2; 06-30-2006 at 01:00 AM.

| The Old Skool Warrior | No no, you misread what he's saying. What he means is that parties won't pay any attention to how bad the Bard is -- the point is, he or she is still a Bard, and they want the Bard in their parties. No matter how much you absolutely suck, if you are a Bard, people will want you. Bards don't cast spells; they sing songs. Most of the time, you sing the same three or four songs over and over and over and over again, while occasionally attacking the enemy and casting the occasional cure spell (if you sub White Mage). It's a boring job, but almost guaranteed to net you a party because it's such a powerful support member. A good sub for RDM would be Black Mage, if you want to truly enhance your enfeebling power. White Mage is also a good sub, but you won't be quite as powerful -- though you will make a great secondary healer for your party, or perhaps even a primary healer if necessary. That one's a matter of choice.

10 | I like both so I guess I'll make both. I'll make a brd/whm and a rdm/bkm. I'll probably make the brd first since I was planning to be a bard before I knew all this. If it gets really boring I'll make the rdm. At this point I like them both equally I haven't really played the actually game yet though so after playing them a bit I'll see which I like better. Hopefully my friend will make enough gold tonight for wp so I can play with him.

| The Old Skool Warrior | Well, like Edward Elric said in his initial response, you can have one character who does all of the jobs. It's easier to just switch between jobs with one character than to pay an extra dollar every month to have two completely different characters. This isn't like WoW or other MMOs where you're stuck in one job.
