EVE online

I know that at least one person plays this game on this forum, and that person is lococolt. Basically I need to take a break from WoW as it's getting a little old to me now. I still like to play it, I just want to take a break and EVE looks like something I might like to try but I've got a few questions

Is the entire game played as a ship, or do you ever actually walk around as a person?

How hard as the HUGE ships to come by. I've seen a picture of the ships relative to the Eiffle tower and I must say some are mind-boggling large, I used the little scale at the bottom and figured out some are about 15km long! Are these something you cannot control untill you're basically an elite player who's been playing for half a year?

What kind of monthly fee is required? I know this could be found elsewhere quite easily but I figured I'd throw it in with this thread.

Ruin this thread with spam and you shall be Burt's next victim.

Unfortunately, the entire game is played as a ship -- but you can purchase new ships as you go along, so it's not like you're stuck in the same little pod through the whole game. I wish you could play as the individual characters, but you have to keep this in mind... all of EVE Online is played on one server. It's huge.

As such, the game costs $15/mo, just a dollar or two more than most other MMOs, but well worth it from where I'm sitting. Currently, my EVE account is suspended, but fortunately you can recover it at any time, as they don't delete your characters unless you ask them to. You are allowed a maximum of three characters per account.

For kicks, I'll attach one of the larger versions of my character just so you have have a look at how detailed the character modeler is. Even though you never get to play AS your character, the photo shows up everywhere, in all kinds of different information boxes and such. Fine-tuning the models is half the fun of getting started.

You can also specialize your characters in all kinds of different skills. You could eventually have your character maximize every skill in the game, but because learning is time-based rather than experience based, it would easily take at least a decade to learn everything available to you. That's a decade REAL-TIME, not game-time.

It's quite entertaining, and once I fix the networking issues at my house, I have every intention of picking up my game again right where I left off.

Well I've been checking out a fan site and saw something for a 14-day trial. I'm going to go for that, but just curious if it's something that requires having a friend lend the discs to DL the game. Any idea?

Not at all, you can download the entire game from the EVE website... it's just a big file and a long download, but it's the full version of the game and by no means requires any discs. I know, because that's how I got mine. Just follow the navigation on the right and download the client... or click here because that's just as easy.

And yes, you can play 14 days for free before needing to pay for your account -- and no, you don't have to cancel before the two weeks are up because it cancels automatically. You don't need to give any credit information until you are ready to actually begin paying for the game.

Anyway, I'm going to try to get Hohenheim in here for a few posts, as he knows much more about the game than I do, and has invested far more time into his character. I learned about it from him, and it's a lot of fun.

It's a real thinkers' game. You can't just rush through and powerlevel like you can with all the other MMO titles. It's vastly different; very strat-based.

Started in today and I must say it's one of the most complex games I've played.......ever. The interface is quite intimidating at first and the 3+ hours of tutorials doesn't help either. All and all I'm not very impressed but it is most certainly one of the more original MMORPG's I've seen. I plan to stick out the 14-day trial and see how it goes, doubtfull that I'll end up subscribing thouhg.

One thing that impressed me was it's speed. I managed to dl the entire game over a period half that of a patch for WoW. They're deffinetely doing one thing right.
