The opening, which cannot be confirmed as a door, from the waterways into Baron's moat, might have been concealed. Being the supreme military power, it wouldn't be smart to go around leaving their secret passages open. Cecil would lack knowledge of opening the passage as well.

He is in charge of the air forces. Yang knew about it, because during his bit of amnesia, he was apparently a part of the ground force. The mobile infantry units would most likely have knowledge of secret escape route/possible defense gaps. Such as said secret passage.

On a new idea:
The Crystal can be kept by the party in FFIVA. After obtaining the grimoires in the bonus lunar dungeon, they can be used on first form Zeromus, the one that is normally invincible. He will die, and the party is left never having used the crystal. After the credits, your party still has the crystal!
However, the dark matter you can steal from first form Zeromus cannot be retained once Zeromus is defeated. It is automatically removed from your inventory.

Perhaps the designers were going to use the crystal as an item for Kokkol to smith into a new item, perhaps it is a programming oversight.

-edit- Did a bit of research, and used a crystal(using the above method) on Zeromus's 2nd form. It does absolutely nothing.

Sorry to double-post, but I have a new plot hole, and I'd greatly prefer to not let this thread fade into oblivion. I suppose this counts as my first "bump" lol.

After razing the Village of Mist, Cecil and Kain end up in a confrontation with young Rydia. She summons Titan. After obtaining young Rydia as a party member, she is no longer abe to cast Titan.
