Well... you have to purchase the game, but then you can play the first month for "free." I put free in quotes because it's a trial period, and if you keep the account at the end of the trial, you're billed for that month on top of the remainder of whatever month you end up in. So technically, it's not free, but it's a trial period all the same.
You can't get the game for free, though. You have to go purchase a full copy. Oh, and to give you an idea of how big it is, if you get it for PC, it's 6GB.

You don't get billed for the free trial period. Your first bill is the pro-rated portion of the difference between when your trial ended and when the next billing date is, plus the next month. So if your trial ends on June 13, you pay for the rest of the month of June, plus the month of July when the billing process begins in the beginning of July. When you cancel your subscription you still have until the end of the billing cycle to play it....
Also, there is a free trial that you don't have to purchase the game to get, but... you must know someone who has purchased the Vanadiel Collection, which contained a trial card to give to a friend. I'm not about to mail you mine... lmfao!
