Question What is actually right and wrong?

We see everything around us, we seem to make our own ideas but do we really stop and think is this right or is this only what we are told is right? Are these so called "political correct" ideas Morally right? Do you think what we accept as "Normal" behaviour is right and what about the implications it causes?

I am sorry I don't have much to say on it yet but it just kind of occured to me, I think what we are told is not necessary "right" but I would like to hear what you guys thought first.

Nothings' right or not. There's no way to generalize.

Criminals are branded as bad, for doing something "wrong", but there is no real way to determine whether it's right or wrong.

It's basically pretty simple, when you think of it logically. Killing somebody is branded wrong because you're ending somebody ELSES life.
Steal is branded wrong because you're TAKING somebody elses' things.

Maybe I'm taking crap, though. Yeah, I see these things as wrong, because that is what I was taught. It's a tough subject, though. I'll wait for more replies before going further into this, I think.

I think the main thing about discerning between what is right and what is wrong is how it affects society. Anything that is detremental to progress is wrong, and anything that helps progress is right. A cure for some disease: right. Killing another person: wrong.

Of course, right and wrong is also relative to the subject being portrayed. Is it wrong to kill a man who has killed others? Is it right to kill them? It's hard to make the choice between what is right and wrong, and it is based mostly on what morals we were taught by our parents and friends.

Alright, kiddo. That's a one-liner. If you'd read the rules, you'd know we don't tolerate stuff like that... That's a warning for spam right there.

To avoid future warnings, don't spam. Why not check the rules out?

EE actually sums it up pretty cut and dry. When you think about it, as he said, it basically just comes down to how it affects society.

Although, on the other hand, we could be talking about morally right and wrong. Morals are based on peoples' values. I think it's pretty obvious, but not everyone lives by the same values. It's all a matter of where you grew up, who you grew up around, and the moral values of those around you. Though you might not think your peers have that big of an effect on you, they really do.

there is no virtue to differ between right and wrong, just the basis on knowing what a bad deed is. In the future, murdering someone may not be casted as 'wrong'

in the past it wasn't, not until the 16th century atleast anyway

There are a couple of universal truths.

Do not steal.
Do not kill.
Do not lie.
Do not rape.

In no society are those acceptable. Other than that, every other right and wrong is up to law, tradition, and opinion.

Even though this is spammy, it answers the question:

The Bible informs you of what is right or wrong. The Old Testament specifically goes into law.

Uh, Adam, people have known it to be wrong to kill others since when the Ten Commandments was made. It's one of the big ones. I've never heard of it being ok to kill someone back in the 16th Century.

Though I do somewhat believe the ways of the commandments is how we should base our systems on, although I don't feel like everybody even the most loyal of christians follows them. This is more of a Question of is what has been displayed as right actually right? Or what is considered wrong?

A subject which is often debated in here is the right to your sexuality. Naturally this is wrong, we weren't designed nor do we require to change our sexuality to same sexes but it is getting to the stage where it is morally wrong to not want anything to do with them, same with foreigners and the right to deny people cause they don't met up to your standards.

This subject is really open to many areas I guess but the right to be and believe in what you wish to is slowly fading away. It's like how 1 person can mess it up for everybody then suddenly it becomes deemed evil and wrong, yet things that are wrong are becoming acceptable. I do not like living in these times.

I feel that the Ten Commandments as well as the law of love are basically how we are meant to live.

1. "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments."

2. "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain."

3. "Observe the sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, or your manservant, or your maidservant, or your ox, or your ass, or any of your cattle, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your manservant and your maidservant may rest as well as you. You shall remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out thence with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day."

4. "Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God commanded you; that your days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with you, in the land which the LORD your God gives you."

5. "You shall not kill."

6. "Neither shall you commit adultery."

7. "Neither shall you steal."

8. "Neither shall you bear false witness against your neighbor."

9. "Neither shall you covet your neighbor's wife"

10. "and you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or anything that is your neighbor's."

That's fairly easy to do. The law of love is also relatively simple. "Treat others as you wish to be treated."

Well, thats the unabridged verision. Basically, if you take out the historical attributes, it's an easy enough code to live by.

Even easier is the Boondock Saints credo: Do not kill. Do not rape. Do not steal. These are principles which every man of every faith can embrace.

No offense but that is not true. In fact the Viking's lived by the exact opposite of those very rules and they are the ones who pretty made the European lifestyle which has been adopted by the rest of the world.

I personally believe that the biggest problem is people don't see there own people as important. They worry about other people dragging themselves to their levels, they have no care for themselves. I know this is kind of the opposite to what I said in the previous thread but I do agree with going to Battle to protect those you love but I do not agree with going out of your way to protect somebody you know next to nothing about when there is not really anything positive to gain besides a frail feeling of joy inside.
