I would have to say Tales of Symphonia. Not only did it have a good story, but the characters were awsome! Not only that but the battle system was fast paced and was very deep, unlike the new Tales of Legendia where the battle system felt a lot slower paced.

There's also Grandia 2. Again the story was awesome, as where the characters and the battle system. I couldn't help but fell sorry for Ryudo as you go through the story and you learn what happened to him before the game.

There are probably many more that I greatly enjoy, but I don't feel like listing them now, or they were already said three times.

SHINING
FORCE
III

it's the biggest ****ing shame on the planet that north american gamers basically only got to play 1/3 of the game. but the version released in america (scenario 1) is by far the greatest tactical rpg i've ever played, and my favorite RPG outside of the NES final fantasies.

Baldurs Gate: I only have the Ps2 version which is weak compared to the PC version but I still quite enjoyed it.

Fable is pretty fun the first time around. But it, imo, it lacks replayability.

Its advertised strength (being able to build your own reputation, good or evil or anything inbetween) is its greatest weakness because no matter what your choices are, they don't have a lot of influence on how the story unfolds. While there are quests with two sides to them, one for good and one for evil characters, the story still stays the same. You cannot play a truly evil character because the game forces you to do good.

And without wanting to spoil any of the story, the base game's ending wholly depends on a single choice rather than on your actions throughout the game.

The PC version (The Lost Chapters) adds some quests and a couple of hours of gameplay past the point where the Xbox version ended, but even then, whether you picked good or evil at the end of the base game doesn't make a diffence in the addon content.

That said, Fable is very good for what it is, a pretty straight foward, modern action RPG.

My top non-FF choices of the moment include Star Ocean 3, Legend of Dragoon, Xenosaga, and Tales of Symphonia (didn't get to play it very far before my Gamecube broke though ;/ ). Of those, Star Ocean is probably my top pick. The story was strong, the characters well-developed, and the battle system was a lot of fun. The battle trophies add some fun optional challenges for boss fights, too.

I'm counting the KH series as Final Fantasy, which is why they aren't listed.
