I started to play Final Fantasy some days ago, and i've been glued to the game since that. It really rocks. But: I am on the water ride thing, and i've met Ultros, but i cant beat him! I've tried too many times now. How should I do?

| The Old Skool Warrior | This topic actually relates to FFVI, NOT FFIII. I'll move it to the appropriate forum. As far as how you should beat Ultros, make sure you're using Banon to heal on every single turn. It should keep you alive easily. If you're still having problems for some reason, well... maybe you're simply not levelled up enough. =/

| | There actually was a lvl up trick before u get to ultros, there is a loop in the rapids. If you have a rapidfire controller, and you set your battle to memory, you can leave your snes on for days, going round and around and gaining lvls at the same time... forgot exactly where and how tho lol! XD But like Loco said, Just have bannon heal & sabin blitz... : )

n/a | I do use Banon to heal and Sabin's Blitz technique, but i will try to loop around in the river to gain levels. EDIT: I saved at the save point just before Ultros. How should I do to get levels now? Last edited by kr1sse; 04-01-2006 at 03:17 AM.

| Does what you can't. | I don't think you can do the level-up thing from where you are. You're one save point too far. If you want to, though, you can restart, as it shouldn't take that long to get to where you are now again. As for Ultros, you have to make sure you have Banon in the back row and use Health every turn, no matter what. Try a regular Attack with Edgar, and then try the Auto Crossbow, and use what's most powerful. Ultros will counterattack everytime he gets hit with Fire -- still use it from Terra, but be ready for it. (You might want to put Terra in the back row for this battle, too, if she's going to be using Fire for the whole thing.) Ultros also has a counterattack for one of Sabin's Blitzes -- Suplex doesn't work, and he counters Pummel, I believe, so use Aura Bolt. And the level-up trick. There's a point in the river that, if you choose to go up and not left, will send you around a small circle and back to the same spot. If you go through your menu and select "memory" for your cursor, then have Banon use Health every turn, Edgar use the Auto Crossbow, and Terra and Sabin Fight, you can tape the Confirm button down on a controller with "Turbo". It'll keep going the same way through the river -- up, and around the circle -- and keep running into the random battles there until, well, you take it off. So if you leave it on overnight, or for a few days, you'll keeo fighting the battles and keep gaining Exp. and GP. And the best part is, every character you meet after that is automatically on par with your levels. The only character you'll have that isn't at the same level is Locke. The bad part, though, is that later in the game, you get things that give your stats bonuses at level-up, and if you get all your levels then, you will get normal status increases instead of the bonuses. By the way, if you start again to do that level-up thing ... You remember at the beginning, when the moogles helped Locke rescue Terra? There was one that could Dance -- the one he learned was Dust Requiem. In battle, you can unequip that one (Mog), and later use his Mithril Pike and Mithril Shield on somebody else.

n/a | azrafel#1: I've tried many times, and Ultros does the same things in the same order every time, so I don't think it will help to rty more times. Sasquatch: I am one save point too far. I do use Autocrossbow every turn, it is better than Edgars regular attack, better than the Bio Blaster too. That little circle is what I am aiming for. Whats the "back row"?

| | keep trying new things... If ultros is doing THAT much damage to you that bannon's "health" is not enough, try also curing with terra & edgar(items) and let sabin do the offense solo with pummel/aurabolt, (whichever is stronger). Its slow, but it may be sure.

| | If nothing is working at all, then i suggest restarting, especially since your only a short ways into the game. Placing a character into the back row can be accomplished from the menu before the battle, and during the battle. Doing it during the battle will cost you a turn though. Basically doing that will mean the charater in the back row will take less damage, but will also deal less damage, from physical attacks. I would put all magic users in the back row. Also, since edgar's autocrossbow is a ranged attack ( i think) then he should go there too. Sabin isn't sffected during blitz's and Bannon just needs the extra protection. And there are ways around the " He does the exact thing evertime." First, try different thing at different times, I've always had a different battle with him. He whips my underleveled ass, and through enough fights, i'll get lucky. Back row will definatly help. I'd have at least bannon and terra heal Maybe terra every other turn. Cure, fire, cure, fire. And have edgar cure with potions when necessary. Sabin blitz. I always prefer AuraBolt... Good Luck | ||||||||

| | Back row is your friend. With a few exceptions, you usually want everybody in your party in the back row throughout the whole game. Also, even if you feel like you're not making any progress, you don't necessarily have to restart. When your party gets annihilated, you respawn at the last save point you were at and lose all items/gil/etc. you've gotten since then, but you keep your experience and levels. This means that you'll eventually get strong enough to take out whatever kept killing you, although it might take a while. And yeah, Auto-crossbow, Aurabolt, and Fire are your friends. Use them religiously, and from the back row. | ||||||||
