I would say they are as far as your capabilities. Unless there's a high demand to offer graphic design services for signatures or avatars lol.

I've worked for 3 separate companies in graphics, internet marketing, and web design and the skills utilized to make these works are definately used just as much as any other type of graphic design. Of course companies are gonna want to go for a more conservative look
