Tales from beneath the biro

I've decided that it's about high-time I started to post some of my own artwork in here, especially as it is a subject I am currently studying. The title explains it all, the media i prefer to use is biro on paper. It's not a type of material used often in art, but I like it because of it's scratchy look and feel. The trouble is when you copy these images up onto computer, as a lot of the feel is lost. Same with pencil sketches, paintings and other non-digital art forms, so i'll try my best to capture the escence of my work.

As for the subjects of the work I will be putting up, it will differ from piece to piece. I will submit fan art, and my own creations. Some at leasure time, some from class. I will try to keep my submissions constant (a few a week perhaps), and I hope that other people will view my work, whether they respect it or think its a load of crap!

The bit I am posting today is some fan art from my developing Final Fantasy VII series. It is of Nananki (Red XIII) on the Cosmo Canyon clifftops looking into the sky sometime after Bugenhagen's departure. I have also added an idea from The Lion King, in that memorable scene where Simba looks into the sky and sees Muffassa's spirit talking to him through the clouds. I have used this to portray Bugenhagen amongst the stars, and Nanaki seeking guidance from him. I had to use my imagination when it came to Bugenhagen's image, as you only see him in that polygon-shaped form, so i tried to make the image of a bald old man.

Oooohhh...! I get to be first to comment!

I like the way Nanaki looks in this picture. You... biro'd him well. He looks like I'd imagine he'd look, although with a bit of a softer/cuter face than the one you see in the FMV's during the game. That's okay, because cute animals are cool.

I also like the colors and the shading in this picture. It's really nice, especially on Nanaki. The only part that doesn't completely agree with me is Bugenhagen. He kind of looks like a ninja to me, moreso than an old bald man. Like, he's wearing one of those ninja masks with the open space around his eyes and the top of his nose, or something. I would imagine him to have a big handle bar moustache, too, for whatever reason...

Anyway, I like it.

Definately enjoy it Especially since it's FF:VII related first off. And the Cosmo arena of the game was a very moving one.

Love the style of color you have, and the background. Very cool. Fine FF fun! =)

I wish I could draw free-hand as well as I do digitally sometimes.

Whoa... i havent posted in here for a while! Anyway this isnt a biro pic... its an acryllic painting I did on canvas for a bit of art coursework. Im a bit peed off that the photo angle and lighting is dogey (acrylic is so shiney), but you get the over-all impression. Basically I was trying to relate colour with emotion. I used my made-up manga-style character and drew her 3 times, each using a different emotion and colour-scheme.

Nice job! Acrylic CAN be reflective of the light, I know what you mean. It was hard for me to get decent pics of my art work since they were far too large to simply scan. I like the blending ability of the paint as well.

More stuff!

Well... one more thing actually. Heres an unfinnished acrylic painting of JENOVA. The image I decided to make of her is a mixture of the different forms of her in the game. The "flashback" JENOVA, Death and Synthisis. When this is complete I will repost it. Basically it needs more added detail, a more realistic and expressionistic expression and i may include some of the characters fighting her.

Anyways, comments and suggestions please.

That's wicked, val. Love it. I must tell you, you've got a great talent there, but then again I told you already. Keep it up. Looking forward to see more art.

Well, i've been practicing the anime-style and although they're not as good as some people's, heres some sketches I did of my main roleplaying girlie Runa Crimsona. Some people know that she has been a martial arts user, and then a dragoon for a long period of time. Well, shes back as a martial artist and here she is!

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1...ine17/Runa.jpg
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1...una_Action.jpg

Heres a Red Admiral Butterfly I painted with acrylic paint applied entirely by coctail sticks. I actually prefer cocktail sticks to paintbrushes... they give a nice scratchy effect.

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1.../butterfly.jpg

Heres an oldie from a few months ago, when I was trying the anime-style on another RP character, Kieran Xanthus. See how Runa looks much better!

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1...eranXantus.jpg

And another pic of Red XIII I did for ~Xu~ a few months ago.

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1...7/RedDemo3.jpg

I'll hopefully get some more scanned, and i'll take some photos of my art project, Barry the Beetle when he's finnished too. As of now, comments please!

Okay! I'm going to offer some constructive critism here.

First picture: Nicely shaded and nicely drawn.

One problem, though. The left leg. It looks a little like it has a joint near the upper leg, which make it look slightly abnormal.

Other than that, nice job!

Alright, now second!

Nice work here, too. I'm assuming that's the same skirt from the other picture? If you're working on animated pieces, you may want to rethink about how you want the skirt to look. In the top picture it looked particularly tight and now looks very flowy. (Just a thought.) The left eye looks very slightly deformed, but other than that, it's great!

Third picture: Absolutely terrific work here! The shading and colouring is perfect, and I cannot find a single thing that I could say was out of place. Very nice!

Fourth picture: The head is waaaay too big for the body. It makes him look slightly hunched in his positioning, reason being the bigger head and thicker neck matching each other but not the body. The right arm is behind his breat, which make him look as if he's meant to be facing another way than I (assume) he's meant to. Other than that, I like it, especially the Leviathan (?) surrounding the jewel in the background!

Fifth picture: Wow! Despite my dislike for Final Fantasy VII in general, I think this is a great piece of work. What captures me most is the colouring and the shading. It's wonderful and there's not a single thing I can advise or offer any type of critism on. Very nice!

Thanks for the critique! I definatly prefer honest answers to "lol thats gud" answers.

I do know Kieran's head is waaaay to big in the 4th picture. It was soon after I bought a book on how to draw anime-style, and it was one of my first experiments. I generaly find body proportions hard to do perfectly... i've had some really bad cases of deformaties in my characters before!

As for the Runa pictures, I find making both eyes looking good hard too. I get one eye perfect, then the other one comes out aweful. Originally, I intended on the skirt to be a casual fit, quite flowy but still complientary to the figure. The second picture portrays it a little better, but I made it too much of a tight fit in the first.

Thanks again for the honest comments!

No problem!

I know exactly what you mean about body proportions.
I've been drawing for about twelve years or so now, and for years, I got body proportions wrong -- and still do.

The way I learnt to perfect that (at least a little), was to go into Paint on the computer and practise bodies and heads and stuff. No detail needed, just outlines, unless you feel the need to do more.

It really does help, especially if you have a bit of patience to use Paint. It's easy enough to learn, but it DOES need a lot of adjustments.

Unless you have shitloads of paper.

Thumbs up ***absolution!!!***

*wow there are so many i cant decide which to comment on first

*ok il start with your first pic,red XIII,now thats what i call a free hand drawing!i can sense from the lines youve made that you just kept your emotional balance with every stroke.thats what ive been telling people who draw not to control too much!youve done a good job on him!nice colours too

*those runa pics are very goo,you really have a talent with coloring and i aknowledge you for it!

*i specially like the butterfly you made,a fine mixture and blending of colour,it adds up to the life of the image!very verygood!

*seems you are fond of red XIII,you draw him well.if you practice to soothen your color and to soften the strokes you can do much better!i know you can!

*i see youve done storm, good form and balance in color, again ur skills impress me.

*those cows are funny,i see now that you use pencils first tomake an outline of the figure you draw.nice techniqe.

*that zell comics was good, but corny! hehehe

*wow you surprise me still,i havent told
