7,993  | Yeah. Avast is good. There's also AVG. But uhm.. I have Norton 2005. I didn't spend money for that, though. But yes, try as Plastik suggests. I've used it and it is pretty good. ..Or you can just get a Mac. (j/k)

2,891 | DarkVivi, Spybot is an adware scanner, not virus scanner, though both are important. I myself have used Avast for the past two years and it's kept my system virus free. As for adware/spyware, I recommend Spybot, Lavasoft Ad-aware, and Spyware Blaster. Using all three of those will, for the most part, ensure that any adware/spyware is caught before it installs itself (sadly, you have to pay extra for Ad-aware's real time scanner). If you do contract any, using Spybot and Ad-aware in Safe Mode should be able to catch everything.

2,891 | Indeed, Hijackthis will give you a list of any non-default registry entry and if you go a little deletion crazy, you could hose up your system entirely.
