Kalisto: Yeah that was just great! As far as villians go, Crocodile is definetely the best villian I've seen thusfar (keeping with K-F's fansubs) and his final fight with Luffy is AMAZING! His design, his evil ambitions, his POWERS. People love Gaara of Naruto, but Crocodile would own that little punk and put him in his place.

Oda has such an AMAZING imagination, he really does, his uses of international mythology and folklore rivals that of JK Rowling and the Harry Potter franchise as well as his puns of English and Japanese pronounciations. People just don't give him a chance. I mean all teH HrDCoRE Anime fans pass on it, they can't get pass that "weird artstyle" yet its THE biggest franchise in Japan (FACT: Chopper merchandise makes 1/6 of Japan's economy). Yes kids, it IS more popular than Naruto despite what some may think.

Nova: Yes it's how Oda (the creator of the series) OFFICIALLY spells the character, they changed it in the US version because of fears of confusing it with Zorro (but really, who cares). You have NO idea what you're missing out just seeing the dub version, I swear to you!

I loved the episodes with the angels and all. Y know the village on the clouds and stuff and the huge crab that kidnapped the ship lol

One Piece is awesome! I to hate 4kids crap dub.

Anyway, I mostly read the manga. I only have the first two volumes, but I read all the way up to about the start of the Alabasta era.

I also think Ode's art style is cool and different.

Anyways, I`m currently up-to-date with the manga and anime. I can`t say I like this arc I as much as others, but hey, Franky is cool.

Haha, I can vouch for that. Everytime I tried to get my friends to watch, they passed because it looked "stupid and weird". Ah well, that kind of thinking baffles me, they are the ones missing out on probably the most wonderful story told in an anime.

PS: I also happen to love the art-style; it IS weird, but the way it fits the characters' personalities and way of acting, is truly the best part of it, imo.

Not to mention the first couple of story arcs are KINDA slow. My sister watched all the way up to the Usopp/Kuro Arc but stopped saying she didn't like Usopp and though it was just "Bleh". After a long time of convincing that the story gets better. She eventually got up to the Nami/Arlong story arc and got completely hooked. We both cried during Bellemare's death scene (her for the first time, me for the second time; it's the ONLY movie/TV scene that can make me cry on cue)

About the artstyle, yeah they expect something truely dark and morbid like an Anime PotC, but they only see this rich colorful almost kiddie friendly artstyle, and it turns people off. Not to mention when this was discussed at K-F, it was pointed out a lot of Anime fans (especially girls) are probably expecting teh HAWT BISHIES like Sasuke from Naruto or Sesshomaru from Inuyasha while One Piece hardly does ANY OF THAT. The artstyle just doesn't SCREAM Bishounen like so much other Anime does.

Yet the fights (especially in the Manga from what I've seen) are bloody and brutal (damn the other day I found a really good scan of the manga with Luffy fighting Crocodile and now I can't find it) Oh well. It's FANTASTIC! Yet what most people see on the surface is a "kiddy adventure cartoon".

Another thing as one pointed out, is that some people are just USED to the whole Pirate stereotype. I'd like to quote a member of K-F's board for what he said on the matter:

Alot of people have this belief that pirates were more fiction than fact.
Pirate's on TV history lesson.
Peter Pan and The Goonies showed pirates as a kids fantasy.
Pugwash and other Pirate cartoons showed that pirates were only treasure hunters.
The Legend of Long John Silver showed pirates have peg legs, eye patches and hooks creating a stereotype.
Shows and movies based entirely on Blackbeard only show him as a ghost or tell a more friendly story about him.
Then you have One Piece which is more closer to what a real pirate would be like. In fact it destroyed the old pirate stereotype making it original. (In which the American's hate)
Finally you got Pirates of the Carribean which made the old pirate stereotype cool.

Of course of all things, I was checking out some PotC fansites the other day out of boredom and curiousity, and came across a "Pirate Fansite" called "Pyracy". And of course I thought I'd check to see if any One Piece fans were there and found this topic. Where a guy goes on about how it sucks because it has a crap plot and artstyle and, what really bothers me, "Pirates don't stretch", "Pirates don't use katanas" and a sarcastic remark conveying Oda's take on Mermen is wrong. I have no idea if he really saw the dub or fansub (I'm guessing the former). But it seems to show even "Pirate" fans are so attached to their "Arrr" Stereotype (just look at the way they post there .

Although they do mention PoDW though. That show rocked.

IMO:
Japanese One Piece>PoDW>Everything else>Eating Excrement>Death>Dubbed One Piece

I like the art for One Piece. I like that Ode's art is different form other series. I mean most anime/manga series seems to have the same art, but with Oda, you know that he drew that.

Also, I think that it fits the story and all.

Those people are the type of extremists I hate. It's good that they picture and like Pirates a certain way, but honestly, there is no reason to bring down One Piece because it's not exactly the same as the Pirates THEY have in mind. Ah well, it's really a shame they are missing out on one of the best Pirate stories, ever.

Yah your right. I got all the episodes in there original format and have been watching them for a month now. One Piece is a great show,never seen the american version of it though.
