Radiata Stories - A real time RPG that is somewhat comedic though there is some serious depth to the plot and characters. Nice Cel-shaded visuals and highly innovative gameplay/battle system also.

Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht - A turn based RPG that has everything that FF has and them some. With a fully orchestrated soundtrack, Anime-style visuals, deepest plot EVAR and an ace battle system, it is a true masterpiece.

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time - Another real time RPG with an immersive storyline, fast paced battles, Anime-style visuals, and a killer soundtrack.

If you're also willing to look into older ones I recomend Mario RPG and Earthbound. Mario RPG is one of my favorite games, it's goofy but tons of fun. Earthbound is the first RPG I ever played so I give it alot of credit, but it's a silly fluff game to play, with a simple yet fun and unique battle system.

Personally, I enjoyed the Breath of Fire series.
I'm assuming you already know about Chrono Trigger/Cross.
Lunar1&2 were pretty interesting too.

EDIT: Omg setzer! I loved Earthbound. How could I forget
that game along with other old school games like
Secret of Mana/evermore, Mario RPG, Lufia and all those games
I used to rent for SNES lol

secret of evermore
secret of mana / seiken densetsu 2
secret of the stars
secret of mana 2 / seiken densetsu 3
chrono trigger
earthbound (wish they'd make a sequel, i think the N64 sequel was cancelled)
edit: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n08/mother3/ - looks like there is a sequel, but for GBA. too bad i dont own one, dont think i want one. even though i've always been a big Nintendo supporter.

illusion of gaia
the legend of zelda: a link to the past

yeah... im more of an SNES rpg fan =(

Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic.

The quality of Japanese-made rpg's has been going steadily downhill since the golden PS1 days. I haven't played one that really caught my attention since Final Fantasy IX.

Yes, Shining Force. Oh my god Shining Force.
And as far as the NAMCO RPGs go, i really dug on Tales of Destiny - talking swords, bad-ass bards - and the battle system was almost quasi-fighting game. really really great game.

Also give Skies of Arcadia a try. Beautiful anime-style graphics, massive airship overworld, tons and tons of sidequests and squeaky clean gameplay - a truly overlooked classic.

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is by a relatively smaller company, Nippon Ichi, but has some great, dark humour and amazing sprite visuals. Tactical RPG with no level limit, great quirks.

I also loved Shining Force (must have for any old school addict), the Zelda series (not really RPG, but still great), ANY of the Star Ocean games (though 2 is still my favourite), and Xenosaga.

Dragon Quest VIII - Do you like your RPGs slow, but the battles are long and action packed? Then this is for you!!!

Tales of Symphonia - As already pointed out, "enough said"...I am disappointed by the new "Tales" game, Legendia.

Fire Emblem - PLAY THESE GAMES...NOW!!! Any of them (Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones for the GBA is the best!!!)

Digital Devil Saga - Do you like your RPGs violent, profane language, and the occasional "sexual" reference? Then this is for you!..

Kingdom Hearts - Duh...

Xenosaga - Fun game...Interesting game...Xenogame? Ha...a xenophobe is someone who is afraid of anything "alien"...haha!

I would suggest looking into the Suikoden series, but I have a sneaking suspicion that you would dislike it. There is also the fact that the first two games are incredibly rare. You don't really have to play the games in chronological order, but you get nice little bonuses for it. Eh. If you want, look into getting the 3rd and the 4th installments, you should be able to find them relatively easily. The 5th is coming out at the end of March.

Another one would be Shadow Hearts. I've never played it myself, but I hear nothing but great things about the game. Well, aside from the few bad things about the second one. But hey, no game is perfect(Except Suikoden, stfu)

Uh.. that's about it from me. The other games mentioned, especially Breath of Fire, are great ones.
