Yes, another FAQ.

I noticed that a lot of people don't really know how to accurately describe the music they hear so that others will understand them. For example, the recent Linkin Park thread. I believe someone said some inane crap about Linkin Park being called nu-metal because 'oh wow, it had guitars and drums'.

Any intelligent person would know thats not how a band is categorized. Personally, I hate categorization, but it is necessary when talking about groups of music. So, this thread is designed as not only a reference for music genres (With examples!), but also as an kind of introduction to various genres of music.

How this works:

You make a post about a genre that has not been listed, with some band references and I'll decide that if it is accurate, I'll add it to this post in an ever-growing list of genres.

I'll start:

Metalcore
A mixture of Hardcore and Heavy Metal. Bands such as Integrity during the 1980's help build this genre, but it has only recently began to gain popularity. Metalcore bands are often hard to identify as many have fusings of hardcore-influenced sound and metal influences.

Example bands:
Nuclear Assault
Shai Hulud (sort of)
In Flames (influences)
Children of Bodom (influences)
As I Lay Dying

I like the concept behind this thread. I know I've done something like this thrice (strictly metal genres) but the more the merrier, ne?

Speed Metal/Thrash
A mixture of punk rock and heavy metal. While some bands harbor some more neo classical influence (e.g. older Metallica), some bands were all about aggression (e.g. Slayer). Typical bands have a large emphasis on double bass.

Power Metal
A more melodic speed metal with cleaner vocals. More often than not the themes will be Fantasy related. Typical bands: Blind Guardian, Nightwish

Death Metal
A more aggressive thrash metal with harsher, sometimes guttural vocals, increased distortion, and an even larger emphasis on double bass. Typical bands: Bolt Thrower, Morbid Angel

Wow, it's been so long... But, i think this thread was a good idea, people really think that msic genre's are like, EMINEM. He sang rap songs a hell of alot, so all his music is automaticly rap. Well, close enough, but not quite.

and maybe you shouldn't consider yourself to be the be all and end all of musical genre categorising.

2. I don't consider myself 'the all and end all' of music genre categorising. I'm trying to ****ing help improve this forum (ala the 'guitar faq' thread).

What I do consider myself is a good forum member, because unlike you, I'm trying to improve this forum.

On topic: if this thread were to continue, any suggestions of genres put forth by anyone who likes metal will be shot down by you, this is the reason why i posted what i posted, you said you will decide whether each genre post is correct or not, you have a negative disposition towards the metal people on here already.

So it wouldn't really work.

says who? I put forward a genre that was a sub-genre of heavy metal! I never said I'd judge it on whether I like the description, I said I'd judge it on how accurate I felt it was (hence having examples etc).

Mind listing what you've contributed to this forum?

That's what i am talking about, you have the negative disposition to metal, if this mini discussion between us hadn't have happened and i posted something, chances are you wouldn't agree and deny it. Its not based on your understanding of it, there are people with other opinions towards music other than what you think.

Take a band.....Slipknot for example [a band i know you would know]

some people say they are nu-metal, some people say thrash, some idiots say death metal, who are you to say who is right and who is wrong, you said you would decide what is correct and what isn't, and i don't think it is for you to decide.

Maybe you should've worded it differently.

You have a point, however.

1. I don't have a negative disposition to metal. I have a negative disposition to metal fans (such as yourself). That does not mean I'll be prejudiced even in the face of over-whelming truth. That would just be an assumption.

2. I never pigeon-hole a band into one explicit genre. A band can have influences from different areas, or influence a particular genre(s). Thats why you can put "(influences)" beside the name.

3. Besides, if you don't think a decision I may make is fair/accurate, you can always protest it (you seem to be competent at that. Like a hippy, you offer no alternatives).

i am good at protesting, i question everything, instead of just excepting what people say....herd mentality.

Bands having more than one genre, and many different influences is not under discussion here, i was referring to you and your 'i shall decide what band is what' you cannot argue that you said that, this whole little discussion between us stemed from that little thing.

If you hadn't have said that then all would be well and good.

P.S. earlier i said you have a negative dispositon towards metal people, in the last post i was rushing and missed off the word 'people', i know you like metal i can read, you don't like metal people, i know this.
