There are a few anime's with sad moments in them like Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust but the one anime that i found the most upsetting/ saddest was Cowboy Bebop by far....

Simply put, Evangelion.

By all standards a truly depressing storyline for a truly depressed person

I'm not sure if anyone watches anime drama, but in Ai Yori Aoshi, where Aoi and Kaoru came back to there old apartment and when Kaoru explained to Aoi why he was always looking depressed. That was sad in a beautiful way.

FMA and s-CRY-ed HYPER SUCK. I would've liked it better if that STUU------PID Kanami died, and that Kazuma would avenge her.

the end of evangelion movie sort of elevated it from "sad" to "completely mind blowing."

what about berserk? i mean, one minute the band of the hawk is enjoying all the glory under the sun, when suddenly

Spoiler:
guts leaves, griffith rapes charlotte, gets caught, is imprisoned, tortured, the band of the hawk is nearly utterly destroyed, guts comes back, they get griffith, he's hardly human anymore, the godhand comes, griffith becomes a demon, the band of the hawk is devoured by a massive army of demons, caska gets raped by griffith in front of gut's eyes - one of which is destroyed after CUTTING OFF HIS OWN ****ING ARM to try to save her, which he can't.

i'm sorry - that's just about the most emotionally devistating thing i could ever possibly imagine happening in an anime.

It's GOT to be Wolf's Rain. I felt sorry for those wolves running the snow, searching for paradise; I wished I could join them (if I was a wolf) in their quest so I could escape from all the world's strife.

X is sad in general.

But what got me was Voices of a Distant Star. It's a very short, and very sad, movie about two friends who really are in love and get separated. It reminds me so much of a military deployment... only much longer.

It’s unbelievable how a movie that is the length of an average episode of an anime can be so vivid and striking. Voices of a Distant Star was the product of the lone (but aided at some points) efforts of Shinkai Makoto. Shinkai Makoto, who was virtually unknown in the anime production world, began to pave his way as an animator, writer, and director. This captivating romance tale of his mixed with science fiction is a truly unique piece of work.

The concept of two people in love separated by war and space communicating solely through the rather quaint process of text messaging shows a truly unique streak that is hard to find elsewhere. Even without a fully developed history of either of them, in twenty five minutes the viewer can already feel the pangs of loneliness from their situations. With a unique twist the movie’s plot develops into a exquisite love story riddled with tragedy and loneliness. To create a story and character that will connect with the audience is a valuable skill which Makoto wielded to created this touching story.

Since the anime was created by one person alone, some of the animation faults must be forgiven. In the beginning it might annoy the viewer, but it becomes less noticeable as the story becomes more engrossing. Also, I feel that Voices of a Distant Star can outrank some large budget productions in terms of cinematography and art direction. Masterful camera direction is a major plus in the presentation of the movie. Shinkai Makoto utilizes camera angles and lighting to project potent atmospheres that make up for rough animation. That brings up the battle scenes which were done in CGI and clashes a bit too roughly with the 2-D animation. However it didn’t hide the excellently executed choreography which has similar qualities to the epic battles in Macross or Gunbuster.

Music and sound effects are very important attributes to any good film and Voices of a Distant Star filled out both successfully. The background music for Voices of a Distant Star is made up of mostly piano pieces which set a calm yet lonely atmosphere throughout the movie. Personally, I felt that the background melodies accentuated the movie excellently. Another well done aspect of the audio were the sound effects. Shinkai Makoto made it so that the lonely beeps of a cell phone were as startling as the explosions of rockets. This movie‘s success in camera direction and sound effects worked together to create the various atmospheres seen in Voices of a Distant Star.

In conclusion, Voices of a Distant Star has it‘s learning curves, but there are certain qualities of it that you can‘t find in a mediocre anime. This brilliant short story about a boy’s memory of a girl he loves never leaving him and a girl’s feelings which must overcome time and space give it a poignant atmosphere the audience can relate with. It's more than likely we’ll be seeing Shinkai Makoto’s name attached to many other animated works in the future. Shinkai Makoto displayed his talent as a storyteller and artist in this short but epic piece, Voices of a Distant Star.

Hmm...Elfen Lied? seems very sad. Is it a series?
If Voice of a distant star is sad than I might go out and buy it.

He is trying to get to the world above; which is much better than their own, by traveling along on these tubes that transport garbage back and forth between his world and the other one above. Well, there are these metal rings; saws of sorts, that come quickly down so no one can climb on them and make it up there.

It was sad, because at the end he tries to climb up there and the girl is begging him not to do it. But he is hit and falls to the ground. It was sad, you have to see it because I am certainly not doing justice to it.
You mean Gunnm (Gun Dream) aka Battle Angel [Alita]?

Saddest anime...I'll probably be shot for this, but...Sailor Moon.
In season 1 when Naru falls in love with Nephrite and then he gets killed trying to save her and he dies in her arms and turns into sparkles that float up to the sky while she sits on the ground crying.

Then in the last two episodes, the 4 senshi are killed and Sailor Moon is left alone to fight Metallia by herself.

And in season 2 when Safiiru dies trying to warn his brother and save Sailor Moon and the black moon symbol on his forehead had disappered because he had been purified. And then Petz(I think) is sitting on the bed holding his jacket and crying and then it fades away.
Also in season 2, it's sad when Chibi Usa thinks everyone hates her.

There's alot of really sad things that happen in Sailor Moon...it's really not as kiddyfied as it seems. You'd probably have to watch the uncut Japanese version to really see all the death and chaos that Sailor Moon has to offer. o.O

Captain Harlock is a pretty sad series too, especially the Arcadia of My Youth movie.

And in Full Metal Alchemist, episode 25 and the episode with the little girl that was turned into a chimera were two of the saddest episodes.

I'm agree. I didn't saw the Japanese version of Sailor moon...but it was very sad then. My favorite, Sailor Jupiter... sob sob..

Full Metal Alchemist is not only sad buy also extremelly shocking. I don't think there are much anime with such an attitude..It left me speechless.

Chrno Crusade is my choice. I find it very sad when you struggle against the fate your best and when you win in one way, you are actually lose. It made me very sad.
