A curious discovery by me during my History of Western Art class I learned something about the Mithra. The Mithra was an ancient religion/cult that existed during the time of the Roman Empire. Some say it pre-dates Christianity and might be the foundation for it. But that is all speculation, though one site makes the question that Does Mithraism mean Christianity is Fake.
Another interesting tid bit, my teacher said that the cult was an all male group. Type Mithra in google and you'll discover nothing but things about the cult, at least for the first few pages, nothing about FFXI. Mithraic or Mithraism is a widely known cult that has people very curious about its very secretive roots. I found it quite entertaining.

Not to turn this into a religious topic, but how can one spiritual belief prove another false?
Especialy considering there's 0 proof behind all religions. You're beliving in something that you don't know is true or not. Nothing can disprove a religion except sheer logic, not another religion/cult. |

In fact, Sean, let's not turn this into a religious topic. I told Andro to post it the other night because I thought it was humorous, but I never got around to telling any of you why...
See, here's what strikes me as odd. Mithra, the cult, is a male-only elitist society from far before our time. Mithra, the kitties, are female-only sex symbols with perky ears in FFXI. Does it get any more bipolar than that?

I don't really think they named it after that... I mean hell, they edited some of the japanese into OTHER japanese words(or they simply never changed it...). One of the pieces of equipment is named after a block of cheese...
In any case, this isn't Xenogears/Saga where everything has some sort of secret religious meaning behind it... and if it was, it would at least make sense... ![]()

Yes, I highly doubt the Mithra were named after this cult too. While SE has been known to use names from religions and legends, in each case they at least resembled the form in some way. I don't think female only cat people quite resembles a male only cult >.>

Ah, but see, you misunderstand.
What more could a male-only society want? SEXY LESBIAN KITTIES!!! That's the joke, the way I see it. As for how/why SquareEnix came up with "Mithra" for the cat race, I've got no clue.

Something that pre-dates christianity? Could you direct to me to a site that shows this?
I have yet to play FFXI but they do have a lot of religious/pagan names used in them, but most of them are differant from the actual legends. Do the Mithra's in FFXI seem like a female only version of the cult? And what are the similarities between them and Christians?
