I didn't play FF VI before it came out on PS here in Europe (with a demo of FF X so it's not that long ago). It was a good game, with one of the best battle systems ever (Esper system is awesome) but it had too much of a patchwork universe with too many different elements in it and some major storyline lapses such as Emperor Gestahl all of a sudden deciding that he wants peace...

Final Fantasy VII is the better of the 2, but Final Fantasy VI is great too and it definately deserves the credit of the first modern Final Fantasy which VII often gets...

Cause it's not. I personally liked FFVII better. Not that I didn't like FFVI, but I thought VII's storyline was WAY better than VI's...

I personally find Final Fantasy VII to be overrated. I don't hate it but I don't love it either. However, I do love Final Fantasy VI. I haven't completed the game but I still think it's great. The storyline is totally original and so are the characters. I could say the same thing about VII I suppose but the storyline of VII doesn't interest me as much, that's why I stopped playing it. I grew bored of VII and so far haven't been bored of playing VI.

It's just a classic game with a classic storyline. The main villain is a crazy looking psycho clown who doesn't care about anything but himself. He's a great character overall.

Some people say that the characters of VII appealed to them more, it was the other way around for me! I love the characters of VII but I prefer the gang from VI. You can have more people in your party while you battle and there is a larger cast of main characters in this game which is excellent. Another reason why I prefer VI is one word.. Ultros! This guy is really cool and makes the game mildly entertaining.

I found that VI had many more memorable moments than VII. I can remember a few things from VI unlike VII, I can only remember pretty much one thing. The Opera scene in VI was amazing and I really loved it.

Well yeah, I prefer VI. It's just a classic game with a great storyline!

I thought VI was better because of the major cast of awesome characters and it had good development for most of them. I also like that Kefka got away with what he wanted to do. RULE THE WORLD! HAHAHAHAHA VII was a good game but it did not grab my attention the way VI did.

Observation number 1: Then and than are two different words. Sorry for the flame, it's just a pet peeve. Better THAN not better then. No hate meant toward the poster, just venting frustration of people not knowing proper grammar in general.

Observation number 2: Most of the people who say FFVII is better played that one first or at least before the older ones, so therefore their bias is swayed. The same holds true for me and many other older gamers who played IV and VI first, and we will always hold tight to those classics, believing that no polygons or Sephiroths will ever stand up to the stories and character varieties of IV and VI.

Observation Number 3: Fanboys/fangirls are responsible for much of the FFVII craze. While I loved FFVII and it was a great game, making the series more available for more gamers, it really is not as great as all the hype. Nothing could ever be as good as the hype for FFVII. The internet is responsible for much of the hype, and had the net been around when the older games were released, then I'm sure more hype would have been given those as well.

Conclusion: It depends largely on the generation of the gamer. While in some cases people can be converted from FFVII fanboy/fangirl-dom, the majority of FF fans stick with the "girl that brung them" when choosing a partner in the franchise. Therefore, in conclusion, everyone send me a present now.

FFVII had a great storyline and I really liked the materia system and I enjoyed playing the mini-games on there as well, but VI personally I think its better because of the whole variety of characters and how their roles are in battle. And I enjoyed fighting and leveling up my characters to gain a spell.

Both games are good, but the FFVI experience I remember is gonna always be more greater than any RPG I'll play. At the time, FFVI was the shit.. no doubt about it. I'm gonna be rash and say it's what made Final Fantasy big in the U.S. The first Final Fantasy I played was Mystic Quest, and although I liked it, the experience was nothing compared to part VI. The story is real deep, and I liked the music a whole lot.
In comparison to FFVII, the experience I got wasn't as great, but one thing that VII had over VI was technology.. I mean come on FMVs were badass in VII (when the weapon emerges from the water and gets shot down by the Junon Canon was my favorite). Other than that, I found the story line to be confusing at times, but I'll have to agree that the materia system was pretty cool, but it's basically like equipping espers in FFVI, and so on.
People argue that VII was better than VI, and V was better than VI, like you guys said, it's a matter of what game you played first. If you played VI when it released, you would get the full experience w/o knowing about the technological advances we have today with FMV's, music videos, etc.
I play FFXI nowadays, and although I think the game kicks ass, it's never gonna replace the memories I had playing FFVI. I just didn't have that experience with FFVII. FFXI is my first MMORPG as well, and someday I'm gonna look back and post messages on another board about how FFXI was better than FFXXIII lol.

well, i don't think it's better. The graphic is almost the same, but the story of vii is better. Though some of the chars in vi is super hot, (i mean the girls) Yup-yup. But anyway the story of vi isn't that bad. The bosses is a bit boring though, i don't like them. But i like this girl (don't remember the name) She has green hair. Agh, i have hentai pictures and movies of her, it's incredible to fap after.

i havent playd on ffVI but it look good but for me it is ffVII on ps1 i play on it all day and if i have to sale it it wood go for £20

In my thought I feel FFVI is better than all the rest because it balances the fighting and the storyline with a subbed in love story... FFVII was good dont get me wrong... but the ending left people wanting more... as did FFX but they didnt need that with FFVI... that game had it all... the good batles, the great music, the awsome storyline... it was a complete game with out compromising the ending or the game its self...

And with the added feature that came with the PS1 version of going thru the game over and over and trying to find everything in the game how awsome is that... only way to make it better is add in the old school new game + option to the game like Chrono Trigger and Cross had. (another shameless plug for squaresoft games that rock)
