FFIII Magic Lvl Question

Okay, so I'm at the beginning of the game in a sense (I just got the ship/boat from the Vikings) and I was curious to know about the Magic level usage.

I'm having trouble understanding how to allow my mages to have more magic points. It's like Level 1 magic has a pretty high stat for them so far... being 14..16..18 points, where Level 2 and Level 3 magic like Mini, Thunder, Fira, etc have only 2 or 3 magic points which is annoying since I can't use these spells but a couple times before my magic points run out.

How do I increase these points? Is it simply a number that increase when my Mages level up, or do their Job levels determine how many magic points they have. Or does it go up depending on how many times I use the spells to gain experience?

Job levels involve the effectiveness of a job's abilities.
You have to be a mage of some sort to use most of the available magic. Depending on how many magics you have equipped will effect how your magic points increase. If you don't have any magics equipped to a level slot, your points won't increase at all, and it won't do so until you've equipped some. Once you have magic equipped it will begin to increase after battling. Whenever you get further into the game you can become a sage that is able to use all magics and summonings (as stated in the guide.) Do Not choose this job, your magic points drastically increase, and if you decide to change back it will take a long time to adjust. Instead become a Magus for black magic or a devout for white magic for double the amount of mp.
