"Your characters level up with experience gained from battles, but your character's job classes level up with actions executed in battle. So, if you perform a number of actions in battle -- no matter what they are -- those actions count toward leveling up your character's job class. The job class determines which particular stats get preferencial treament when your character levels up, and the job level determines the effectiveness of the job's skill(s) or magic." - geekyDaD

To be more specific
Your stats are determined by your current job, and your experience level. Job level does not influence stats. Job levels affect the job's skill, and attack and defense multipliers that are not shown in the status screen. Ever wonder why you have 100 attack, and yet as you increase in job level, your damage occasionaly sky rockets, with no increase in your attack?
You may have seen # of hits pop up over your character when you attack. Statistics, level, and job level influence this amount. What isn't as well known is that defense is also affected in the same way. In other words, when you go to change jobs, level up your job a bit before you try and conquer harder areas, as you will be considerably weaker, and not just from the adjustment phase, but also from the decrease in multipliers. Final Fantasy I through IV, on the original NES, Famicom, and SNES versions, listed their attack and defense multipliers, so that you could also see what various gear actually did to them. It's the same with the DS version of FFIII. Different equipment setups also affect multipliers, but for the most part, the higher attack/defense, the better. Also, HP is not affected by change in job level, unlike other Final Fantasy's. Vitality affects HP gains on level, so in order to reach a high level of HP for each character, one must switch to a high vitality job, endure the adjustment phase, then gain the level. The other method of just staying in the highest vitality giving class, is also at times just as difficult, as gear becomes an issue at times during the game. Gear that increases Vitality does not seem to affect HP gain during levels, or it's just so slight that it's unnoticable. Hope this helps. |
