Final Fantasy VI Tech demo

o.O for the Nintendo 64!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=cxjRrE8nTqM
I guess Nintendo had them make this demo to show of the N64s graphical abilities.

It actually look pretty cool!

(Sorry if this video has been posted before. I had no idea it existed)

Yeah..i remember this. I grew up being a Nintendo fan, and i remember in Nintendo Power magazine when they had screenshots of this. Nintendo and Square used to be the best of friends and the next FF game, everyone assumed would b on the N 64. Square soon realized that how hard it would be making a game like this on the cartridge format so they went with Sony and the PS instead

Yeah, they couldnt have possably fit all of that story into an N64 cartridge back then. Sure, it could easily be done today but uh...>___> Its a bit to late.

I dont care what anybody at this board says, I think the first 6 FF games should be re-made.

Err actually the probably could considering all the old FF roms are only 8mb.

Anyway I am guessing this was made around about the same time they started developing FFVII as the graphics look very similar. I would say if they do chose to re-release FFVI they should use this as a basis.

Anyway thanks for that

What I want to know is if they could do graphics like that for the N64 about the same time they were developing FFVII, why couldn't they do graphics as good as that for FFVII?

I'm pretty sure that the PS1 was more powerful than the N64. As powerful at least.

Not sure what you are trying to say here..But not all the old FF roms (I assume you are talking snes) are 8 mb. The only one that was 8 mb is FF IV, FF V is 12mb and FF VI is 24mb.

FFVII spans 3 CD roms..there is NO WAY in hell they could fit that onto a cartridge. One CD-Rom holds more data than a cartridge, even after compression. That is exactly why no rpg developers made games for the nintendo 64. The only REAL rpg for the 64 is Ogre Battle 64, and that is 320 mb.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the largest N64 cartridge to date is Resident Evil 2(512 mb). That was with the N64 expansion pack too. And that in itself was a huge undertaking trying to compress the game enough to fit onto a cartridge.ONE FF VII CD-ROM would take up more room than that entire cartridge. Infact, the total size of FF VII is 1.8 gb.

And the PS1 is not as powerful as the N64. The nintendo 64 is a 64 bit system and the PS 1 is a 32 bit system. That said though, because of the fact that the PS 1 was cd-rom based, it could hold much more data than the nintendo 64 cartridges. This resulted in being able to fit pre-rendered backgrounds and FMV scenes like the ones seen in the PS Final Fantasies.

..and yea i'm not sure why FF VII's graphics were not good. VIII and IX really showed how good PS Final Fantasies could look.

Also..kinda the opposite to what we see here, but before VII became a PS game, they started developing it for the SNES in japan. I enclosed a few screenshots of the SNES version of FF VII

I'm not entirely sure those are real, General. If they were real, why would they be using FFIII/IV Character sprites, FFVI Monster & Summon sprites, FFVI backgrounds and part of the FFVI world map as a battle background?

Looks more like something that someone made in RPG Maker or something. =/

I thought they were fake too, these are infact real screenshots though. VERY early concept shots more than anything though. They are taken from a japanese magazine article.

Though i think you mean FF II/IV..the character sprites aren't the same from that game. They may look SIMILAR, but they are not the same. Just look at the colors of the characters and the details in their clothes.

Some of the enemy sprites/backgrounds are from FF VI..but i like i said before they are concept screen shots.

As for the world map..yes it does look the same, it is drawn the same way in Mode 7, but it's not the exact same map.

..note the early concepts of what the limit breaks would look like though.

...yeah...err...the older FF games were 2D pixelated...and ranged from 8-16 bits I believe.

an 8mb FF game being made for the N64 would likely turn out to be around....2.45gb or so? Dependin on what game. And as GeneralLeo said, the largest N64 game was only about 512mb. Here were talking about FFVI. And its about 40 hours of gamplay or more.

(Final Fantasy VII was 1.45gb btw)

Just look at that video. The N64s graphic capabilities were far greater than the PS1. It was the cartridges that kept the N64 from being able to truly take off.

*yawn* it was already said that the N64 was more capable, and the fact the SNES is a 16 bit console (GBA being 32) *shrugs* I dont know how they made FFVI a higher bitage than what is normally supported, but i think (id haveta check the emulator again) but they managed to break 16 bit with FF6 and quite a few other late releases. and leo, those pictures seriously look like someone had fun with a sprite editor or something with one of those pictures, because the one on the left of that dragon looks like someone fused the white mage and black mage forms of Lenna (FFV anyone?) an altered Kain from FFIV and Galuf's daughter (cant remeber her name -_-) also from FFV. So, honestly, I think someone was just playing around with FF6's engine and created that... monster.

Yes they could've made a killer FF for the N64. Sure FF VII was very big because of the FMV. Take away the FMV and you got a much smaller game. They could've made larger N64 carts but the price would be higher. Although no FMV would've not have been as exciting. The FMV in FF VII proabably over 2 cds worth.

the bigget SNES cartrides are actually 48 mb and the i think the only two are Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia.

And 16 bit is just talking about how powerful the hardware is not much a cartridge can hold. With different compression techniques, you can really fit a lot on one of those things.

Yea definitely, if they had taken out the FMVs i bet they could have as well. Though FF VII without the FMVS would be like...uh idk. cookies without milk? Although they could have had ingame cutscenes but that wouldn't have been as cool. I mean they did fit Resident Evil 2 by taking out the cut scenes. Or maybe they left them in.? I mean the FMVs are what take up much of the room.

As for the pics..haha i know they look completely not legit. I mean one does look like Reina in a black/white mage combo, and the dragoon does look like Kain although with an orange feather or something, and the yellow character looks Krille as some kind of geomancer/summoner or something. And the fighter looks pretty standard as well, maybe a Cecil or Bartz?

Remember that this was an extremely early CONCEPT shots. Concept shots are like the name implies, concepts. None of this would actually be what the game looks like. Just using old characters and stuff to get new ideas. That way they don't have to do any work because they got those game engines all done. Just toying around with ideas more than anything, probably don't even have finished character designs which i why they used old characters
