Obviously you need a keyboard if you want to play with the PS2. I also suggest reading guides and stuff from like gamefaqs, or even the FFXI section of TFF. But wow.. just starting off and you fight tough characters. You should check the status of the monsters before you fight them. You should start off with decent challenge monsters and easy prey.
At least.. that's how I'm starting off, heh.

Well you do not need a Keyboard to play on the PS2, it does have a keyboard, but it is highly advised that you do since otherwise you will be typing really slowly. A keyboard for the PS2 is pretty easy to find at Best Buy or a place with PS2 accesories, they are generic, since the Sony version is a little pricy.
As for playing the game, you usually do not learn everything all at once. But most of your best learning will be done playing the game and learning from your mistakes. But like Shadow was saying, if you select a monster and pull up the menu on the left, you will find "Check" on the bottom. Select that and it will let you know how it stands against you. This is relible up to a point, since monsters vary and your abilities may not be enough to kill it.
