Rating a thread.

I noticed that nobody ever seems to bother rating threads.

Would it be spamming to click on every thread and select a rating for it, even if the thread is really old?

From what I can figure from the way these boards work, posting in a poll or commenting in a thread will re-jump it back to the top of the particular board topic are it's in - but selecting a rating doesn't affect its position in the thread listings?

How many ratings does a thread need before the stars show up on the listings page?

The reason I ask is because I noticed that rating a thread increses my Gold by 5 points each time I rate something, and being a greedy sort I want to increase my Gold as much as possible, but I don't want to get into trouble for anything that could be considered spamming.

I think that if you're going to rate threads, rate them sparingly. If it becomes a gigantic, effortless gold generator the administration is going to catch wind of it and drop gold revenue from it to 0. Now that you've brought it up, they may do it anyway to ensure that people don't do it in the future.

Rate posts instead! That is awesome. Everyone should use reputation.

Edit: It seems as if Loco is aware that you can get gold by rating threads. Or, at least, it's listed in the "How to gain Gold" thread stickied in this forum. Perhaps there is a limitation on how many threads you can rate in a day? If not, it's still abuseable...

Let's hope one of the admin types notices this thread and can clarify matters.

Not that there's really much you can *do* with the Gold once you've got it... unlike some other forums that have ridiculous prices for certain features and "extras" which makes it near impossible to have enough money for all the cool things.

Anyway, that's beside the original point I was making, and I'm sure it's bad etiquette to rip off ideas from other message boards, even if they do have really cool ideas.

Cool ideas? You should state them. Even if some may be put off my the stealing of ideas, it may give rise to new ones.

I myself have been having my hands full trying to buy certain things at the store. I have never posted that much, and it's only until now that I've managed to step it up a bit. As such, I don't have all that much gold. >_> So the store poses a challenge to me. There's only so much stuff I actually want, however. Username and title modifications never appealed to me.

Here that, administration? We want more stuff to buy! =P

Yea, if it is on that list, I would think it was Ok.
In fact it's prolly there to encourage thread-rating ^^
As for the 5 gold per rating... Meh, it's only 5 gold.
A good 30 seconds of your life rating threads will buy

Ah, well I just thought the shop items that the people over at AdventChildren.net were pretty cool. Things like Materia, Keyblades and weapons and such.

You could have the Espers from FFVI as adoptable characters you can buy and have them displayed in your profile page, or any/other such things.

There's probably lots that can be done to give the Gold system more use and make the boards more "interactive" in a way, in the sense that Users can craft their profile pages in the fashion they choose with Materia, weapons equipped, GF's junctioned, and all sorts. You could even have particular "jobs" on sale that people would like (in addition to the User Ranking System already in place that relates to total post counts).

yeah - we definately need to throw some 'cooler' stuff into the online store... I mean jazzing up your username and usertitle can only go so far

I have debated on actually having physical prizes for sale, like Final Fantasy Games, Toys, Posters, etc... since I get discounted prices from 2 of my affiliate stores. The problem is that I think it may REALLY encourage spam to a crazy level.

However, I like the idea of having adoptable characters, materia, espers, etc in users profiles and post bits. All of that is VERY possible. I remember Inferno Mage had a great idea to buy trophies about a month ago, but that idea sort of died due to him getting real busy.

Let's start brainstorming some ideas on some new items that users can buy with their gold that are actually cool. I'm sure we can find room for a couple 'small' things in the user post bit, but we have plenty of room in the user profiles to show items, as well.

As far as rating threads, I want to encourage it. There are some quality threads hidden out there that should get rated. 5 gp per rate isn't that abusive, but if it gets out of hand we can always just disable the award amount.
