um...what exactly was jenova was...was she the first meteor?

she used lifestream to navigate trough the worlds...don't know much about it but is clearly explained in Advent Children

Mainly to answer your question, JENOVA is an alien entity that acts like a virus and seems to feed on the energy of the lifestream. She did arrive in a meteor that caused the wound of the planet known as the North Crater. It should be made clear that this is not 'THE Meteor' that can be summoned by the Black Materia, however...that is capable of destroying all life on the planet (and possibley the planet as well) in one shot.

I think that that is partially wrong, Jenova was excavated nearer Nibelheim, possibly where you find Lucrecia, but definitely nearer Nibelheim than the Northern Crater

No she wasn't she was taken to Nibelheim. She excuvated in the Northern Cavern.

I think Jenova's main goal all along was to merge with the Lifestream energy and corrupt the entire Gaiasystem, but she was prevented from doing so either because the Cetra stopped her, or because she was just physically impossible to do because she wasn't originally from that world, and therefore "incompatable" with the Lifestream.

But acting through Sephiroth and twisting his motives to do what she couldn't - she would take control after all, while all the time Sephiroth would be thinking that it's his own will that wants him to merge with the Lifestream and become a God, not realising that Jenova was influencing his judgement.

That way the Jenova that was a part of Sephiroth would fulfil it's main goal, and the rest of Jenova would follow, through the reunion.

That would be an interesting point of view...if the producers of Advent Children and the original game didn;t say that it was wrong.

Sephiroths will is strong enough that it dominates the JENOVA cells. however that doesn't mean that JENOVA is Sephiroths puppet. No...they are working in tandem...why should either try to control the other when their goal is the same? Both JENOVA's dead cells, and Sephiroths will desire the same outcome.
