Eldest is 650+ my friend, not 700. But I've read both books and really enjoyed them. There is also a movie coming out I made a thread about.

I read Eragon and am half way through Eldest. I think they are very good books. Eragon is definatly my favorite book. I wish more books were as good as them.

I've read Eragon, but not Eldest. Actually, I've read most of Eragon. I got bored after a bit. I didn't think it was particularly well written. I mean, congratulations to the author for getting a book published so young, but I found Eragon to be something of a Gary Stu and the whole thing was a bit cliched. Eldest is supposed to be better, but I've got five or six other books to read before I can finish Eragon and read Eldest.

I have my compliments and complaints about Eragon and Eldest. For starters, the writing - at least in the first book, and not so much in the second - was good, descriptive, and emotional. You could really get a feel for the world Paolini was creating, and how Eragon actually felt about it. The story arc, once developed, was interesting and engaging, which caused me to keep myself up late nights to finish "just another chapter."
That said, I do have my fair share of gripes, some of which I share with the rest fo the fantasy community. As original as some of his writing seems, if you look at it with more than a fleeting glance, you realize, "Hey, haven't I heard that before?" And yes, you have. For instance, the "ancient language" and "true names" bits were lifted, word for word, directly out of the Earthsea series. Also, Urgals? Uruk-hai? Similar? I think so. Layered, tiered cities? Minas Tirith. The "Gray Folk?" Direct Tolkien reference to Elves. It's a good book, yes, but its really an amalgamation of other series. The issue with fantasy these days is that nothing is really new. Everyone's come up with everything - or so it sounds. Not to toot my own horn, but has anyone written a book about a world where magic and technology coexist? Sure, there's the Vinci and the Alin game thing (the name escapes me) coming up, and Arcanum, but those have completely different premises and universes. ORIGINALITY! PLEASE! *ahem* End of rant. sorry.
